Christian Writer Frank Peretti

Anyone here familiar with the Christian writer Frank Peretti. I have a protestant friend who has given me a novel to read by Peretti. It’s called " Piercing The Darkness" Any thoughts on the writer or the book? Has anyone read his work?

OOPS! Had to edit! The first book of the two is “This Present Darkenss”. Read that one first as “Piercing the Darkness” makes some references the first one. NOt in an overwhelming way but their “theology” will make more sense if you start with the first book.

I was given “This Present Darkenss” by a heterodox Catholic friend several years ago and have both of them in my 'library". Of course at the time I didn’t realize he was heterodox and he cautioned me as well that the book was NOT a Catholic book.

I enjoyed it very much, but I will caution you that if you read it from a critical Catholic perspective it will drive you crazy. The author is a fundamentalist Christian and so the book is all about fundamentalist Christians who perform “exorcisms” on people who then become “saved”.

It’s a good look into their beliefs, however, and it does carry a good moral message about the evils in the world and the liberal adjenda we all battle every day.

I encourage you to read it and make up your own mind. I don’t remember there being any anti-Catholicism but I have to say it was the first Christian fiction I ever read and it helped me on my journey back to practicing my own faith.

I’ve read Peretti’s books (including, when I was younger, his series for children). While they are obviously Protestant slanted (as you would expect from a protestant writer), I don’t think that they were anti-Catholic (though it’s been a while). At the time, I was weaker in my faith and it was a good experience to read faith-based fiction, as fiction was the only genre I was interested in reading (my experience seems similar to Phoenix’s). As Phoenix said, good moral message.

I read the first book “Piercing The Darkness.” I could get past the fundamentalist jargon and the fact that even the angels in the story talked like Baptists, but when the only Catholics in the story were portrayed as superstitious hispanics (a triple insult), I lost interest in whatever else he may have written. Kind of like in the first “Left Behind” book, the only Catholic that was raptured was the Pope, who had recently embraced Protestant theology.

If I’m not mistaken, the Peretti’s an ex-Catholic.

I read his book The Oath. It was a good, light read. Something entertaining to take in the bathtub and relax with. I enjoyed it and would probably read more of his work. Don’t expect to have to use your brain much, he isn’t that kind of writer. But occasionally such light fare is welcome.

I don’t think that people who are weak on their knowledge of their Catholic faith or the scriptual basis of our beliefs should read him. He is not anti Catholic just very, very Protestant.

A better read is The Green Mile by Stephen King. I was surprised by how much religion that this particular book had in it. It isn’t at all spooky like the majority of his work.

Peretti has also written “Tilly,” a strongly anti-abortion short story that has been dramatized and broadcast on the Focus on the Family program, among others. If you get the chance to hear it or read it, keep a box of tissues by your side, because if you’re the slightest bit inclined in that direction, you will :crying:
