Hi, Jamie!
I don’t think that anyone is suggesting anything different; as poor as I am I don’t think that I would ever be as wise as you or any other well-traveled person; does that means that I’m forever the resolute small-minded jackass?
Well, if what it takes is what I do not have then that must be true.
But what if we were open minded enough to accept that traveling the world does not necessarily means that we become more astute or well-informed but that we can be influenced by different perspectives?
Let’s take the terms you’ve cited, can an atheist, Christian, muslim, gay, straight, poor, rich… not be found to be generous, selfish, stupid, rational, irrational, aloof, adroit, self-centered, conniving, moral, immoral…
The answer must be, yes!
Yet, that is quite simplistic, isn’t it?
…all of these could be religious, as well, couldn’t they?
Yet, each one would have his/her own understanding of religiosity. Muslims, for instance, have no quam with killing Christians on the guise of “dishonor.” Their practice is that the word of one Muslim is equal to two non-Muslims; can a Christian find justice in such system?
Many wealthy people believe that the poor and the scourge of the earth; if it were up to them there would be ‘mandatory sterilization’ for all the poor in the world.
The poor, as numerous as they are, are not bent on taking over the world (that’s Pinky and the Brain). Yet, they are seen as the threat to humanity by the ‘over-population’ fear-mongers.
Then we have the homosexuals–they practice that which is abomination to Yahweh God; yet, they are not content in practicing their ‘life-choice’ but they want the Church to validate it.
Do you see how it is more complex than accepting all prevailing tenets?
Maran atha!
