The few bible instances of the term “christian” indicate that this was a name which non-believers applied to followers of the Way, not that it necessarily began as a name they called themselves.
Could it be that they were called christianos not because they were followers of The Christ (Anointed One), but rather because they themselves had been been anointed in the ritual of chrismation, which in the west we know as the Sacrament of Confirmation? That is, as Jesus was the Anointed One, his followers were also “anointed ones”?
Just what is the relationship between the words christos and christianos? That is, what does the suffix -ianos imply?
