This is a yearly tradition in the Philippines. Thoughts?

I can’t remember where, but I’m pretty sure that it’s been condemned by the Church in the Philippines. But they do it anyway.

Yeah. That’s definitely not okay. In fact, the Church in the Philippines strongly discourages it.

Yeah, I’ve heard of that before. I guess they do it to remind themselves of all the suffering that the Lord went through. It’s quite disturbing. It reminds me of the Shia muslims who whip themselves and cut themselves on Ashura.

Philippines are very devout Catholics. They were colonized by Spain and the Spanish missionaries almost “overdid” their job in converting them. Ever since then Catholicism has been defining Philippine identity. You see the modern time consequences in practices and customs that seem odd to the Western Catholic.

I admire their willingness to suffer…but for their own sanity, someone should remind them Jesus wants obedience (to the Church) more than self-willed sacrifice. In this case, it would be A LOT less painful.

It is, indeed, condemned by the Church here in the Philippines. Some Catholics participate against the Church’s teaching but a disproportionate number are from the Ancient Church of the East and the Independent Philippine (Aglipayan) Church, two schismatic sects which broke from the Catholic Church in 1968 and 1902 respectively.

I remember seeing this self Hollywood portrayal - years ago.
Still looks nerdy - and blasphemous !
To me, it typifies the modern world -
Basically - not truly suffer anything for Jesus -
But to look like you are
I thinking doing the ‘running of the bulls’ is more real.
