Christmas Decos Timing

I’d seen a question about the timing of putting up Christmas decorations in “Ask an Apologist” but, since I’m not an apologist - and couldn’t post a thread in the referred-to, related link - I hope it’s okay to put it here.

Christmas decorations have gotten way out of hand, to my mind - but I can’t deny I love them - and in other years can’t wait to put them up. However, while I noticed a reference to the feast of St. Nicholas (Dec. 6), my Mom used to say that my grandmother mentioned December the 8th (Immaculate Conception). So, for years, we didn’t even put up the Nativities in our home until that feast day. And no secular decorations would go up until after all (or at least most of) the Nativities were set up (i.e. nothing secular went up before the religious significance of the Season) - cards didn’t go out either before the Dec. 8th (usually much later).

In that order, helps keep things in prospective.

We follow this same timing about also. Tree, lights, etc don’t go up until after today–“pink candle” Sunday.
I usually don’t send cards out until much later also. Many years the time to work on writing them doesn’t come until Christmas week. The rule is that as long as they go out before Epiphany we aren’t late! LOL

Living in an apartment with 3 cats, I do not have or put up any Christmas decorations at all.

OK, I have an Advent Wreath, which I light only when I stay close to it. Candles and cats can be a dangerous mix.

well before I can decorate I have to put away current decorations such as the fall flowers and leaves, orange candles etc. And then of course I have to clean. You should have seen what I had to do just to set up the Advent Wreath. took me 2 days.

We just passed 3rd Sunday of Advent, anybody want to make book on whether I will have any Christmas decorations up by this time next week?

my Advent preparation is spent almost entirely at chuch. 3 back-to-back retreats this weekend for elementary CCD, Jr High (with posada for the parish), and HS youth. all went great, different in tone, activity level, teaching incorporated, noise level, and spiritual content, but all I think and hope gave the participants a window on the meaning of Advent and some preparation for Christmas. All levels also worked on different aspects of decorating the church for Christmas, and will help with the cleaning and placing decorations next weekend,

so my at home work will be putting away the Advent Wreath, putting up the 14" fake tree and crib set on the same table. I will, as a concession, dust the table top and vacuum the floor around it first.
