Christmas is approaching and everyone is preparing for December 24. What does Christmas mean to you? How do you and your family celebrate the season, after you finish all the shopping shopping and baking of cookies? What do you do?

We observe Advent. During Advent I listen to secular Christmas music, put up the tree, buy gifts. We read the Book of Luke beginning December 1 a chapter each day.

Our parish has very special Advent events, the most special for me is the annual “Nine Lessons & Carols for Advent”.

Beginning Christmas Eve our Christmas celebration begins. We exchange one gift.

We kick off all of the music and celebrate big time until Epiphany. That is our big gift exchange and meal. We leave Christmas “up” until Candlemas, I wear my Christmas jewelry to work, etc for the entire season.

We exchange gifts on Christmas Eve. We put up our tree yesterday and some lights outside. There are fewer cards to mail as many people communicate electronically. I also attended the “Nine lessons and Carols for Advent” at the cathedral church in town. Our parish has a kid’s Christmas play.

During Advent, we have lots of get togethers with family that we won’t necessarily see on Christmas. We always try to attend Los Pasados and the live nativity at a local church. We go to see several Christmas light displays. On Christmas Eve, my husband has to do the music at several Masses and he often has to work his day job too, so I buy a lot of finger foods and snack foods and we graze in between Masses and watch Christmas movies. We have a tradition of eating dinner at this restaurant down the street from the Church and then our family joins us at the Church for “midnight Mass” that’s actually at 10PM. They hold our kids down while he plays and I sing with the choir. There’s only two days a y ear I get to sing with the choir anymore. Then on Christmas, we open Santa presents in time for my husband to go back to Church and play two more Masses. Then we have dinner at my mom’s house.

I try to get to Confession more regularly during Advent. But a big thing my family has always done as I grew up and we still do (I’m 20YO) is watching a bunch Christmas movies each year, anything from Jingle All The Way to Its a Wonderful Life.
