Christ's words, "I thirst" and "When I drink it new..."

Dear Brother’s and Sisters,

In today’s Gospel from Mark, we hear Jesus’ words:

“…This is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed for many.
Amen, I say to you, I shall not drink again the fruit of the vine until the day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”

I wonder if anyone thought of Bl. Mother Teresa of Calcutta’s experience of seeking to “satisfy the thirst of Jesus for souls”. I’ve just completed my second reading of the book Come, Be My Light - The Private Writings of the “Saint of Calcutta” by Father Brian Kolodiejchuk, M.C. postulator of the cause for canonization for Blessed Mother Teresa, and I was struck by Jesus’ words and Bl. Mother Teresa of Calcutta’s desire to give Him souls to satisfy His thirst.

It was such a blessing to read again, how truly she lived to share in the ministry of Jesus and help others to share in His love for all in need of Him. When Jesus says in today’s Gospel, “I shall not drink again of the fruit of the vine until I drink it new in the kingdom of God” it seemed to me “the fruit of the vine” the blossoming forth of His life in souls on earth was entering a new reality as He shared His Last Supper with His Disciples. He would soon give His Life in a bloody manner, even as He gave us His Life in an unbloody manner in that First Eucharist.

May today’s Mass and Holy Communion send us forth, as His disciples to continue His Work, His Mission to bring souls to become “new” in the kingdom. By God’s Grace, like Bl. Mother Teresa and all the saints, let us bring Jesus to others and satisfy His thirst. May His thirst become ours.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, it is good to look forward to our union with the Blessed Trinity in eternity, yet we also (as Bl. Mother Teresa of Calcutta would say) can do “Something beautiful for God” here on earth.

The Mystical Body exists in the Church Triumphant it heaven, the Church Suffering in purgatory, and the Church Militant on earth – though we don’t hear those terms too often currently. On earth, keeping our eyes focused on Jesus, we need to remember that He left Mary and His Disciples with His command to go and make disciples. (Mt 28:19). By God’s Grace, our words and deeds, all done, remaining in His love, continue His Mission.

“Militant” is a good word for us who like St Paul, “fight the good fight” (cf 2 Tim 4-7) against evil. In Ephesians 6: 10 - 17, we hear beautiful words of encouragement:

Finally, draw your strength from the Lord and from his mighty power. Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the devil. For our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens. Therefore, put on the armor of God, that you may be able to resist on the evil day and, having done everything, to hold your ground. So stand fast with your loins girded in truth, clothed with righteousness as a breastplate and your feet shod in readiness for the gospel of peace. In all circumstances, hold faith as a shield, to quench all [the] flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

On this Feast of “Corpus Christi” let us by God’s Grace, pray for one another and for all those in most need, to whom we are sent. May we seek to satisfy His thirst for souls, that we may drink the fruit of the vine new with Him in heaven for all eternity.

Yes, you gave a very inspiring reply indeed!! We are called by God to evangelize to all the nations. Just as the Mass ends in Latin, “Ite, Missa Est” - “Go forth, you are sent.”

The Holy Spirit is the one who really inspires through persons like Bl. Mother Teresa of Calcutta! If my reply did anything good then it is because the Lord gave me something to share with you – thanks for having an open heart to receive the Lord’s work in your own soul.
