It seems to me that so many individuals in our society, including christian politicians, freely choose to embrace and support many values of society that are in opposition to the will of God, ie abortion, homosexuality, porn, fornication, divorce ,ect. Today, can such a society or nation still be accurately described as Christian?

No. Society “exchanged the truth of God for a lie” (Romans 1:25)…

Thank you,

I think society can accurately be described as Christian in so far as Christianity, specifically denominational proetestantism, has changed its position on those same moral issues.

Protestantism as a whole condemned contraception before 1930. Now both Protestantism in general and societly at large accept contraception as a normal, even going so far as to call it a “Gift from God.” The same can be said for many other moral issues including the legitimacy of homosexual unions, divorce and yes, even abortion. Protestant’s rarely blink an eye at divorcing and remarrying three and four times and some of the major protestant denominations go as far as to ordain homosexuals to the office of presbyter. I’ll stop short of claiming that there is a widespread acceptance of abortion among mainstream Protestant denominations and Evanglical non-denominationalists but I will go as far as to state my claim that the demand for abortion is a byproduct of widespread acceptance and use of contraception which has turned sex into a recrational activity.

So yes, as modern pop-Christianity changes, we can expect society to change with it. Many times in fact, it is the other way around with society leading the change and pop-Christianity following along. And this is where Catholics have to distance themselves, doctrinally and theologically, but especially socially in our day to day life. Catholics used to be easily identifiable - large families dressed nicely for Mass on Sunday and such things. Everyone on the block knew who the Catholic families are.

I can remember arguing in high school that America is a Christian nation but that it is far from being a Catholic nation. Personally, I’m in favor of defunding all artificial contraception along with Planned Parenthood, giving tax breaks to interet providers who filter porn and similar initiatives.

Society stopped to became Christian when Christian prayers were abolished from the public schools, and explicitly antichistian legislations (e.g. no fault divorce) were legalized. In the US this happened in the fifties, in Europe earlier. The rest is consequence

I might not have appreciated it when I was younger and going to Catholic schools where there were morning and afternoon prayers, and in one of the schools I went to, the Sisters of Mercy were teaching. It saddens me that there are no longer prayers in schools. That now, they’re all one and the same. Theres not too much religion in school now.

My daughter is still a year away from entering a public school (unless I manage to find a Catholic one in which we can afford) and I worry.

Consider home schooling, if needs be. Education has a powerful effect on the formation of youth, and Christ’s enemies know this, and hence their perverse interest in the education of youth. Don’t suffer your children to be degraded or corrupted. The public schooling I received spared no opportunity to imbibe anti-Christian, liberal tenents into my maleable mind.

in the true sense of the word no.All denominations of non /catholics transgress the truth in one way or another (many in many ways).

Yes. Christian by definition means to believe in Christ or follow Christ. A gay man and divorced people can follow Christ. A person who has gone to confession about an abortion can follow Christ.

This country was founded by Christian men using many Christian values. But it was NOT intended to be a “Christian Society”. It was intended to be a free society. Not everyone in America needs to be Christian. And I dare say it’s wrong for anyone to suggest otherwise. I fully support fighting for laws and voting for representatives that will put forth Christian ideas, simply because I agree with them and it’s my right to vote how I want. But it’s wrong to say everyone should think our way.
