Church "closed" due to snow - not!

Travel is indeed banned during times of natural disaster. Coming from a state that gets several feet of snow per year I guarntee you no amount of snow will be enough to “ban” travel here. Our priest lives at the church and he has mentioned that Mass will go on no matter the amount of snow but certainly doesn’t expect people to risk their lives for Mass. But thats when the snowmobile comes into play…

I’d imagine, though, that blizzard conditions (I remember one, a little after my oldest was born that involved a 2 inch+ an hour rate for 18 hrs and sustained winds averaging around 35mph, gusting close to double that) would be enough. But then, it’s not just the snow but the blowing/visibility … and the fact that by attempting travel, you may be impeding the plow work. (I’m also uncertain about the legality of trying to travel via snowmobile on city streets.)

In most municipalities if there is snowcover on the street the condition is met.

Not in our province. You may only ride on the side of the road as far as necessary to reach one of the trails and you must be a licenced driver with a snowmobile that is registered and insured for PL&PD.

Not to change the thread but I do find that interesting because in my state you are required to ride on the road to a trail and not on the side of the road. inside of city limits…this is due to major complaints from property owners having their easments trashed by snowmobile tracks…however there is like almost everywhere in the midwest a provision that allows snowmobiles to be used as transportation in inclimate weather. The only restrictions are freeways and Federal Highways. THis is no doubt to keep people from decapitating themselves hitting a buried barbedwire fence in an attempt to cross a pasture or cropland. Which has happened more frequently than one would imagine. I am unaware of any munipality in my state that snowmobiles are banned from streets

Buy a cot and he can sleep there when a storm is predicted.

Will you also bring your cot to sleep at the church when a storm is predicted? Do you also bring a cot to your workplace, school, or any other place you may need to be, to sleep there whenever a storm is predicted?

In my work as a nurse in a hospital, this is a requirement!! If the roads are impassable, they send a big truck to pick you up.

The schools are closed, as they are used as shelters, at least around here. Most places of business cannot operate until electricity is restored.
Our church meets in a school so mass there is out. Also, you can’t predict which path to which church will have downed power lines, traffic lights and trees in the road making traveling difficult.

After the last hurricane hit here, getting gasoline meant waiting for hours in lines. EMS and the local Power company will not come out unless winds are under 30 mph.

Am I mistaken in believing we are to make reasonable attempts to attend mass without putting ourselves and families at risk.???

It would be easier for you go and sleep in the church on a cot or sleeping bag and then you could shovel the driveway and sidewalks and help clean after the storm…

God bless you and I assure you being a northerner I haven’t a clue to what a hurricane is like. I have been in dozens of tornados…but those never last for more than a few minutes and the damage isn’t as widespread as a hurricane. Snowstorms…even huge blizzards are more of an inconvenience especially compared to a hurricane. The only real impedement from a blizzard…is that travel is usually impossible…but that only lasts for a day or two at most…even for us rural folks. I remember as a child going out on snowmobile runs and seeing 30 foot high drifts across the highways and the rural gravel roads were often closed for weeks…but that aint nothin compared to a hurricaine. Losing power during a cold snap can put a wrinkle in you plans though…its no fun having no heat in the house when it is -15 below zero outside if one forgets to turn the water off and bleed the water lines in your home you will have a HUGE mess and very costly water damage from bursting water pipes…but again that is more of a headache than a threat to life.

Why does the Catholic Church have to be different than everyone else?, she asked.

Because the Catholic priests offer the Holy Sacrifice to appease the Triune God for all the sins of mankind living and dead. This happens on a daily basis, and is why Holy Mass is NEVER - EVER - cancelled.

The “others”…well they left the Church in the 16’th century…they have no valid sacrifice- do not offer the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ to the Triune God in reparation for sin on their “tables”. That is why they can cancel their “services” that are meant to serve the people and NOT to appease God with the Sacrifice of the Mass.
