A 100% efficient church would be square or rectangular. I don’t know any plots of land on the property market that are circular. 😃
Haha that is certainly true. But the Orthodox church in the town where I used to attend college actually was built as one big circle, like one large dome. It was a round church but it certainly wasn’t a church-in-the-round. They maintained the usual Orthodox design for a church interior and it looks rather nice.

While space efficiency is a concern, given the cost of real estate; we do not build churches to maximize the use of space, but to create a sacred space that lifts the human mind sensorially toward Heaven. An area that is more “open” than your run-of-the-mill office, supermarket, etc, is helpful in a sacred space.

About those dangling lights. Have you seen the lamps used in the Nativity, Bethlehem or the Holy Sepulcher, Jerusalem? Such a design for hanging lamps (redone for electrical of course) might be ideal.

I think you might want to read back a few pages to understand why I was joking about the issue of efficiency at all. We all understand that efficiency isn’t the sole purpose of a church, and that’s why it was used in humour. 🙂
