It may seem an odd, but I’ve been wanting to decorate my house like a church. It started with the idea of getting a kneeler; that lead to the desire to have other church furnishings around the house as well!

There’s different places one could buy church stuff. eBay, for instance, or other online shops. But some of it gets very expensive. Also, it seemed like a nice idea to get something used - kind of like a “rescue” mission.

I met a lady one time who “rescued” a popular statue of the BVM from a local church. She probably didn’t steal it, LOL, although it was never clear how she acquired it. But now the beautiful statue quietly continues to bless her backyard.

So does anyone have any ideas here? I thought maybe calling the Archdiocese might yield some interesting leads, but they might also find it a silly idea, too.

P.S. No one else has posted in Catholic Living yet, so I hope it’s an okay, especially for my first post. This forum seemed the best place to post my query, but please move it, if it would be best placed elsewhere.

Hi. I don’t think it’s silly to decorate your house with some church furnishings. Just stop before you get to installing a confession box. Lol.

What else besides a kneeler are you thinking of having that you would think is appropriate?

You might be able to get furnishings from a church that is closing or renovating. Usually, at least in my dioceses, anything of a sacred nature, such as the statues, goes to some central repository where other churches are allowed to buy or “adopt” it, but ordinary folks aren’t. My parish has gotten a few statues in this way.

If you look on eBay or etsy you can sometimes find church items.

My mother has a pew from our parish church, from when they removed some pews in order to create a wider space in certain areas and make some wheelchair-accessible spots. it’s not the most comfortable thing to sit on but it can hold books.

“very expensive” is really subjective. Furniture and secular decorations are pretty expensive as well, I don’t think that Catholic or religious themed items are any more expensive.

Stuff one could spread throughout the house, such as statuaries, pictures, stained glass, candles or possibly even a small fountain or a small altar. Anything you might see in a church could be similarly doable in a home, expect perhaps the tabernacle. Tabernacles (I think) have to be kept in an official church or under the care of a properly dispensed or ordained person.

It would be quite dreamy if one could have a full chapel in one’s home. It wouldn’t have to be big or particularly ornate; and, since it would be part of a house, it might have to be blessed differently than an actual church or chapel. But it would be a blessing in and of itself to have such a dedicated, sacred space where one could offer constant devotion to God.
