Whew! I’m listening to John Batchelor interview the author of THE BIRTH OF THE WEST about 10th century proto-Europe after Rome crumbled; and am bowled over by the amount of monastic influence on democracy–voting for the Abbott at Cluny revolutionized the world. And the later shaping of the papacy by an essentially Mafia-type thug is wondrous. Hope to get this wildly interesting book by Paul Collins, I think is the name. There are so many Church-inspired adopted practices that we take for granted I think you’ll be delighted, including the introduction of Arabic numerals.
