I find this topic very interesting. The catholic church for centuries has portrayed Jesus, Mary and all the saints…as having western culture appearances. Visual appearances is very important to catholics. Protestants not important.
.
by and large artists, not the Catholic Church per se, have portrayed Jesus and the saints in art. even when a personage or religious order from the Church commissioned an art work, the artist worked from his own cultural viewpoint. The generalization about Catholics vs Protestants and visual aret is ludicrous, as are most generalizations. Look at the most popular 19th c art on a calendar or church bulletin produced under Protestant auspices–such as the famous Jesus praying in the garden, in your local Christian bookstore, and you will see the same cultural bias in the art.

All images shown (appearing to be Jesus) should be images or likenesses from the old testament. Thats all the physical life information that we know of him, but the catholic church has sanitized the pictures of Jesus from this time. You never see a picture or depiction of Jesus wearing tassels from his cossack as Jewish men did in the day and what is said that Jesus wore in the bible. You will see pictures of Jesus with his hands clasped at the front looking to heaven as many of the catholic pictures do. Jewish men like Jesus prayed with their hands behind their backs and chant. The artists, and catholic church has done a great job in brain washing catholics. They don’t want us to ever see images of Jesus when he was a Jew. Interesting because as you know Jesus was never a catholic or a christian…

Why not worship for what he is…
That is what Christians do… worship Him, for what He IS. He is the God of all mankind. Whether Hispanic, Black, Asian, White or Indian. Personally, I see nothing wrong with depicting Him, as such. Those are only human expressions, afterall. They don’t change Who God is. It’s kind of like arguing… “did Jesus have brown eyes or blue eyes?”. Really doesn’t matter, does it?

Jesus became a human, through a Jewish Mother, yes. And He lived in Jewish society, yes. And He is often depicted in that way. But since God has no “race”… I don’t see a problem with depicting Him as the God of all mankind (with various ethnicities).

One poster brought up a very good point. That Our Blessed Mother has often appeared in various parts of the world, resembling the visionary (or the local population)… and also, speaking the local dialect. I think the message is clear. God bless.

I am sure that any portraits, pictures, statues of Jesus/.Mary/Saints would have to get the stamp of approval by the vatican. These aren’t Wallmart items.

What do you mean Jesus lived in a jewish society. Jesus was a Jew…he prayed in the synagogue on saturday the day of rest as all jews did and as God had indicated. Remember thats what we were taught from the bible? But christians came along and again took the jewish out of jesus and god and made the sabbath Sunday. He died in jewish tradition as the bible says. Jesus was never a christian…
About 8 years ago someone depicted a new version of Jesus. Do you remember? The picture was shown through all news media. It was on the front page of most newspapers across america. It showed a very short man with dark features a fat nose and big lips. What Jesus probably looked like. Bill Donohue the head of the catholic league in new york was outraged. He stated it was an insult to catholics and so were millions of catholics outraged. Jesus did not look like that he stated. I guess he wants Jesus like most catholics to look like the sacred heart of Jesus. Even the parish that I use to attend the people talked about it as disgusting. That picture soon disappeared. So much for the image of Jesus not being important to catholics. Your darn right its important.......just like the image we have of Santa Claus.

When I say “Jesus lived in a Jewish Society” I mean, Jesus was a Jew. We are in agreement on that point. He was born of a Jewish Mother; He lived His life as a Jew, among Jews. However, He made it clear that He came to fulfill the Scriptures.

In St. Matthew…

“Then Jesus came from Galilee to John, at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. And John was hindering Him, and said, “It is I who ought to be baptized by Thee, and dost Thou come to me?” But Jesus answered and said to him, “Let it be so for now, for so it becomes us to fulfill all justice.” (Matthew 3:13-16)

In St. Luke…

“And closing the volume, He gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were gazing at Him. But He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing”. And all bore Him witness, and marveled at the words of grace that came from His mouth” (Luke 4:20-22)

Christian’s didn’t “come along” and take the Jewish out of Jesus! Are you suggesting that the first Christians were some sort of an outsider group that muscled their way in? The very first Christians WERE Jews! The Apostles, Mary Magdelene and Our Blessed Mother, among them. Do you not remember the books of St. Paul? And the arguments about circumcision… and freeing the new Church from the old Jewish Laws? You say “Jesus was never a christian”. I agree. For Jesus to be “a Christian” wouldn’t make sense. A Christian is a follower of Christ. How could Jesus follow Himself? No, He wasn’t a Christian. He was (and is) THE CHRIST. The Founder of the Christian Faith. And we, follow Him.

In regards to the ethnic portrayal of Jesus, to which Mr. Donohue objected… I can’t comment. Because I never saw the story. Perhaps you will be good enough to provide a link for us to read.

However, my opinions in regards to ethnic portrayals of Jesus and Mary… are just that. My opinions. I personally find nothing wrong with reverent, artistic portrayals of Our Lord or Our Lady in various ethnicity’s. After all, I do not claim to have seen either of Them… as They truly are. I only hope to, one day in Heaven. Who am I, to say what Our Lord… or Our Lady looks like?

A side note. Our late Holy Father, Pope John Paul II had a great devotion the Black Madonna of Crakow. You can read about the portrait at this link… and view it on the internet, as well. God bless.
