Church Militant versus Immaculate Heart Radio now Relevant Radio

For the past year or so, I have been slowly becoming disillusioned with Catholic media as a whole. I have since begun listening to more podcasts from different Catholic personalities. It seems that some of the Catholic media is unwilling and or unable to comment or shed light on major major church scandals in the past year or so.

I have also become disillusioned with some of my friends who claim they are “conservative“ Catholics. This bothers me. Holy mother church, is not meant to be a political arm but rather the light and truth which transcends the political paradigm.

One questions why I listen to relevant radio, since in their mind, this media company has pushed out other orthodox radio personalities and or thinkers. To me, this has a hint of conspiracy theory. They insist I should listen to more (in their mind) “conservative” media outlets such as Michael Voris’ “Church Militant”. They have had Mother Miriam whom I have a great regard and respect for. Still, something keeps preventing me from consuming this one media outlet (perhaps my guardian angel and the Holy Spirit)…should I stay away from “Church Militant”?

Podcasts that I listen to are “The Counsel of Trent” (Trent Horn) “Pints with Aquinas” (Matt Frad) “The Patrick Coffin Show” by Patrick Coffin & “Patrick Madrid”
 
Has Church Militant promoted heretical notions or teachings?
 
Listen to Dr Taylor Marshall and Timothy Gordon’s show TNT on youtube. I also love Church Militant they and TNT have been monumental in me coming back to the faith and trying to live like a good Catholic. God Bless!

I listened to their interview with Patrick Coffin. I agree with most things. They have an interesting view of masculinity.
 
Relevant Radio has Patrick Madrid… the dude is awesome.

The reason why Relevant Radio canceled Mother Miriam is because Relevant Radio is very different from EWTN Radio.

Immaculate Heart Radio was similar to EWTN Radio (and included some EWTN Radio programs - like Catholic Answers Live).

Relevant Radio is mostly apologetics and talk radio with a Catholic lense. It always was.

Not all Catholic Radio networks have to be prayer & spiritually based. I like listening to Relevant Radio at work… if it was all prayer based and spirituality, I wouldn’t be able to work… I would be praying along.

Also, Relevant Radio does a great job of pulling in Protestants. I often hear protestants call in and talk about how they love the programs.

In other words: Relevant Radio isn’t targeting people who want more prayer, or want more spiritual programs. They are targeting Catholics who are frustrated with culture, frustrated that they don’t know how to defend the faith, etc.

That’s their audience. They are targeting people who like to listen to talk radio, but want it though a Catholic Lense.

In my opinion: the network that is the frivolous one is the Catholic Network on XM. That network targets the cultural Catholics.

So again: different networks focus on different programs and strengths.

As to the question about the discussion between Bishop Barron and Ben Shapiro, the individual asking the question needs to learns a bit more theology - like a lot more.

I have no clue as to what is going on with the heads of Relevant Radio or any of the players. it will sort itself out over time without my help. In Oregon, we have KBVM, which carries a number of sources as well as its own programming, and I do not seek out other sources beyond that. Someone clearly has an idea how they want to run Relevant Radio; whether that is wise of not I cannot say, nor do I particularly care, as it is not the “only game in town”. Should it become irrelevant or disappear, something else by someone else will fill the gap, as Catholic Radio has expanded exponentially since its mere beginnings. And national speakers if they are not given a forum there will find one elsewhere.

Those who take on the attitude that the sky is falling - the negative naysayers - often have personal issues which come out in the negative approach they take to everything. And that is about all I will say.

The problem is that the fruit of these types of videos is not always good. Yes there are scandals, yes there are scoundrels, liars, hypocrites, perverts, adulterers and all kinds of traitors in both the clergy and the laity. This was, us and always will be the case until the end of time. I would suggest you feed your mind and heart with good food that will inspire you to be transformed and sanctified. After all, we have a limited time to unmask, uproot and remove all the things in our heart that separate to from God and neighbor. All that bitterness from such videos are cause for division, suspicion, loss of faith and hatred, depending on who watches them, and it was Christ who warned that we will have to give an account for every idle word we speak. Often times many of those types of videos simply spread gossip, which turns into slander and impacts different people at different stages in life in different ways. For some it means not joining the Church; for others it means joining some SedeVacante cult, etc, etc.
I recommend the wealth of videos that can help you grow in sanctity, which is the only thing that can help change anything. If all the time put into those videos was put into spiritual action, there would be actual spiritual change; it us a spiritual battle which has to be fought first spiritually. Here is the type of videos I recommend you feed your soul with:

 
I’ve listened to Relevant Radio for years, and recently, also Catholic Channel on XM. This works well as I live out in the sticks, and can’t get RR for the first half—hour of my commute in to work. I also consider myself more “conservative” within the Church (though am by no means politically conservative, as on some issues I’m very Dem and others very Repub). I’ve not heard anything sketchy on either channel.

I’ve also worked in (secular) radio and tv for 20 years (DJ, news, control room, traffic, advertising planning, and research). Dropping certain shows is more likely a case of “too many good shows, not enough time”. They merged two radio stations’ program lineups, so they had 48 hours of programming, but the day is still only 24 hours long. Shows were either getting their time cut down or dropped, because there’s really no other option. Ratings; costs; potential revenue (they still have to pay the bills); logistics; these are all much more likely factors in dropping certain shows than a “liberal bias.” I liked Mother Miriam when she was on RR. I was sad she was gone. I’d love it if Catholic Answers was on. There just isn’t enough time in the day for everything good to be on one network.

RR does some prayer. They have the Angelus daily. They have a weekday mass. They have the rosary and other prayers on their app. I’d personally love to hear morning and evening prayer and daily mass (maybe they do, just not when I’m listening). But RR is about engaging the culture, so it aimes to be all-inclusive; trying to reach the lapsed Catholic and non-Catholic, as well as feeding the souls of practicing Catholics.

I think CCSXM tries to do the same (I haven’t listened long enough yet to get a good read on the network overall). I think Gus Lloyd is probably “slightly” more conservative, but certainly not in a Church Militant vein. Certainly, they operate in a different sandbox than RR (part of a larger corporation that they have to answer to, not just their board, sponsors, and donors). From what I’ve heard, they also seem to do a good job. They do good enough that I subscribed to XM to be able to continue listening after my 3-month trial is up.

Neither station is EWTN. I don’t believe either tries to be. They are each filling a niche in the Catholic radio world. It’s good to have options (look at how many options come on your cable, satellite, or airwaves; how boring would it be if you had only one choice and didn’t like it?). Be happy we have a Catholic perspective available at all (and not just mainline or evangelical Christian radio).

Media is undergoing a seismic shift (I live it every day at work). If you have a local Catholic network, pray for them and support them, even if they’re not completely “your cup of tea”. Catholic radio isn’t as well known or established as Christian radio. Without our support, it can easily get lost to the changing media landscape.
