          Rowan Williams’s views on homosexuality are under attack
THE Anglican Church came closer to schism last night after 14 evangelical archbishops condemned the Church of England as evil and singled out the Archbishop of Canterbury for personal attack. The “Global South” primates are headed by the ultra-conservative Nigerian archbishop, Dr Peter Akinola. They include the influential Archbishop of the West Indies, the Most Rev Drexel Gomez.

In a letter to the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, on the opening day of the General Synod in London, the Global South primates criticise his leadership and urge him to rethink his personal, liberal views on homosexuality.

It is interesting how biased this article is against the good orthodox anglicans. It calls them “ultra-conservatives” just because they stand up for the Christian faith.

A quick word on this–it is my recollection that the theology of folks like Dr. Akinola has more in common with Far-right Protestant Evangelical thought than orthodoxy or catholicism, and the arguments presented against Canterbury make clear that much of this debate is cultural as well as moral. The Global South calling Europe a spiritual wasteland is more meaningful in the light of years of colonialism and imperialism and represents more of a cry of “You will listen to us!” than it does a cry of moral reform (though that’s of course part of the Global South’s message). It’s inevitable that this should happen, given the obvious cultural tensions.

With the rise of secularism, modernism, and social and moral liberalism in Europe, I would say that Europe is a spiritual waste land. And furthermore, as long as the Archbishop of Canteberry does not stand up against homosexuality in his Church, then he is not acting as the servant that God chose him to be.

that’s just it. God never choose the episcopal church to serve. he chose the catholic church to do that. the episcopalians are the antithesis of humilty. for them, each individual is his own god. rowans only serves himself.

This is an unspeakable derogation of “episcopalians.” You clearly know nothing of the many Anglicans who are struggling with this appalling situation in good conscience as best they can. Your attitude would discourage anyone who might be seeking the inevitable “homing” to the Catholic Church as so many of their worhy predeessors have done. I am embarrassed for you.

I wouldnt say all episcopailiane are degrogated. Plus, I would state that the Archbishops had every right to proceed with their actions.
 
I support the nigerian bishop, I want powerful and spiritual churches, we need a renewal for Europe, not more destruction.

From them, I think that’s rather rich. IMO, Archbishop Akinola would be spending his time to much better effect if he attended to the sexual irregularities in his own archdiocese, rather than lambasting Archbishop Williams.​

This sort of thing merely increases one’s sympathy for Archbishop Williams.

They should be grateful they are Anglicans - they would never be allowed to use such plain speech in the CC.

No one gains or is the better for these wretched squabbles. They only tempt other Christians to make merry over the troubles of Anglicans - how does that glorify Christ ? ##
