I’m searching for orthodox understanding of the Church’s mission… and … a better understanding of the “gates of Hell will not prevail…(Matthew 16:18)”…below is my current understanding… but I’m interested in other people’s understanding here…

Currently, I’m understanding that the “gates of hell will not prevail” as meaning that the Church will never cease in her mission for which it was created. The Church’s mission is twofold.

First, the Church’s mission is Jesus Great Commission (Matthew 28:16-20); which is to spread the life of Christ to the end of the world (aka protect the deposit of faith). Second, I see the Church as the means of salvation for all humanity.

Thus, the Church will never infallibly error, or she would be spreading a different gospel other than the only Gospel (Galatians 1:6). And the Church cannot ever cease to exist, or the world would have no means of salvation.

Kindly,

James

I agree with you.

The gospel of Matthew gives us a few clues about this Church that Christ started. It is visible, universal, and authoritative, and Christ promised to be with this Church so it cannot error in matters of faith and morals.
