I have to write a paper for my First Amendment class and thought it would be interesting to write about the Catholic position on this part of the Constitution. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for books or scholarly articles about the history of Catholics in colonial America (both general titles as well as those dealing specifically related to the Separation of Church and State). Also, if anyone knows of encyclicals (recent or not) dealing with this topic those would be appreciated as well.

Thank you in advance.

Hi.

This scholarly work from JSTOR appears to be a good start.

I noticed there are many, many articles on an Internet search that may lead to official documents, court cases and the like.

You could also look at the U.S. Bishops Pastoral Letters, specifically beginning with Bishop
John Carroll. The First Amendment says that Government has no business involving itself in the affairs of the Church. It says nothing about the Church involving itself in the Government or affairs of the people.

I don’t think you will find anything like this because separation of church and state is a relatively recent interpretation of the first amendment. Clearly, no one in colonial America would recognize that interpretation as the proper reading of the first amendment.
