Cigar smoking?

Hi I am new to the forums and also new to the Roman Catholic faith,I am in RCIA and I will be confirmed and take my first communion this coming Easter,God willing!That is why I am here,I haad a question about cigar smoking,I just turned 18 on January 19 and I noticed that we had a cigar roller in town so I went and got one.It was one of those hey I am old enough now kind of things,so I got one and went home smoked it and I must say I rather enjoyed the taste and all.I was thinking about trying another and wanted to know is it a sin or is it ok if use in moderation.
I dont want to like start smoking daily or anything I was wondering if an ocassional cigar is a sin?Well thanks in advance,and God Bless!Dominus Vobiscum!

** IMHO, as an occasional cigar smoker myself, and at between 5.00 and 15.00 per cigar I mean OCCASIONAL , I don’t believe it is a sin, if used in moderation.

Healthwise, in my personal situation, since i only smoke in a well ventilated area[this means i don’t get alot of cigar smoking done in the winter], and since I dont inhale the smoke, cause frankly your not supposed to, i don’t feel the occasional cigar is a threat whatsoever.

I quit smoking cigarettes over a year and a half ago[THANK GOD], and since then i have had maybe 10 “fine” cigars, with the occasional “black and mild” inbetween.

Plus there is just the experiance of it in general. The mood and environment must be just right to truly appreciate a “fine” cigar.
I like mine with a certain high dollar “non-alcholic” import beer that i enjoy*, and maybe the right music or company.
Its all tied together in a beautimous harmony lol.

1. Get yourself a good quality “cigar cutter”.
2. Always use a wooden match to light, being careful to let the
   sulfar burn completely off so our in essence using the
   burning wood to light the cigar, or at least a “bic” butane
   lighter. NO ZIPPO’s.
3. Before you puff on the cigar to light it, you need to “roast” the
   outer skin on the edge and light that first so the cigar burns
   evenly.

I could never under stand why someone would pay $8.00 dollars for a cigar, until i smoked my first $8.00 cigar ***

Tobacco it’s self is morally neutral. Just like anything else as such moderation is required. the problem is that tobacco has a very high physiological addition.

But with that said, as mentioned by TheGarg cigar/pipe smoking is a different colored horse than cigarettes. You smoke for the experience and flavor not for the nicotine.

Myself I was smoking 3 packs of Marlboro reds a day until my wife become pregnant. Now I only smoke occasionally, I’ve got my pipe, and have a cigarette a few times a month,

Personally I’m a cheapskate so just about the only cigars I’ll buy are “Backwoods”. I like them as much as any, cheep too. 8 for like $4. Hard to beat an aromatic.

As the others have said, smoking is morally neutral. Just don’t do it to excess.

I will state that as a wife of someone who likes occasional cigars (and I love the smell when they are burning), there are some basic rules to follow for occasional use to keep your family happy (once you get married, that is). First, smoke it outside. Stale cigar smoke inside is pretty nasty. Second, brush your teeth afterwards, and use mouthwash if available. Just as stale cigar smoke smells nasty, cigar breath smells worse. So if you want smoochies afterwards, brush!

As I began reading your post, I thought :bigyikes: “You’ve got to be kidding!” Luckily you were.

Enjoy your cigars. I’ve found some good, cheap cigars, but I don’t think it’s appropriate to put the link here. PM me if you are interested…it would require a humidor to keep them fresh.

I don’t keep my humidor full anymore. I’ve found that, for me personally, to maintain moderation in drink and cigars, it is best for me not to stock up at home. I enjoy both (often together) on an occasional basis. This saves money too…

I’m also a fan of the “Backwoods” brand…ALL NATURAL leaf…no chemicals or additives…I like Black & Mild as well the Rum flavored.
