Cincture

Most acolytes tie their cincture off to the side, soft of like the franciscan knot. Many priests tie it in such a way that their cinctures tie around their cinctures. Is there any norm for how a cincture should be tie for a male altar server?

I do not think so. It is a traditional practice for the cincture to “grasp” the priest’s or bishop’s stole to keep it in place, but there are several ways to do even this.

There is no real “official” way to tie a cincture. What’s generally done though is that altar servers tie it over their right hip; deacons tie it over their left hip, since their stole covers their right hip; priests tie two loops in the center and hang their stole through them.

Then again, the cincture is meant to represent a vow of celibacy, so there is a debate on whether or not laypersons should wear them.

When I am forced to wear an alb, I tie it in the traditional fashion, unless it’s absolutely impossible due to the cincture length.

More properly stated, the cincture represents the vow of chastity. So chastity according to one’s state in life would apply to the layperson as well as to a priest or a deacon.
