“There’s no such thing as a genderless human being, like it or not,” she said.
Are fairies human beings?

I think the point being made in the article about older women finding roles in the industry is interesting. I don’t have strong feelings about it, but it is of interest.

Of course not.

However, there are no genderless Godmothers

This has me very interested in the origins of the concept of a fairy godmother. Is it a fairy that happens to be at your baptism and promises to help guide you in your life of faith? 🤔😆

While this idea does not align with Catholic teaching, it certainly aligns with the history of fairy tales. Fairy tales have been told and retold throughout countless cultures over countless years, and they adopt cultural components with each retelling. Given the recent prominence of the idea of “gender fluidity” in our communities, it’s in no way surprising that a fairy tale adaptation would reference this.

I just can’t tell if its actually intended to push any agenda or not. There are magical characters in fantasy stories that have no gender or whose genders are of no importance. Genderless prince Charming or genderless Cinderella would be more problematic.

Sounds like a hoot! Have thee no sense of humor, CAFers? BTW, I recall the old Carol Burnett Show did something similar with Harvey Korman in drag playing a very large fairy godmother.

The original story didn’t have a fairy godmother at all.

It’s usually next to impossible to identify “original” versions of most fairy tales. For example, what you might think of as an “original” version of Cinderella, recorded by the Brothers Grimm, has the sisters hacking off their toes to fit their feet into the slipper. The oldest recorded version of Little Red Riding Hood we have available has the girl eating the flesh and drinking the blood of her grandmother. It’s really unlikely that what you think of as “originals” are that.

A fantasy character, a being that never has or will exist, can be played by anyone.

To turn this into an outrage bait story.

I wonder, do they deep dive on every movie to make sure there are no gay people involved in the show?

I think it’s a relatively new trend in Hollywood, where a movie has to be “woke” to garner support (and financiing)…but it ruins many movies…e.g. The new IT movie deviated completely from the original Steven King book, by changing the character Ritchie from an adult virgin to a gay man…ruined the movie for me. Captain marvel is now a woman, as is Doctor Who, etc, etc… I have no problems with minorities playing parts in movies, but please, let them be parts written for them, not parts they are being shoehorned into…

Getting my ‘geek’ on here but since The Doctor is an alien, who’s to say Timelords can’t switch gender? She’s like a techy fairy Godmother! 😁

It’s another effort to inoctrinate children to believe liberal ideas of a genderless society. I would not watch or otherwise support it

Uhh, that would be every single one Disney ever touched.

If you look at the brothers Grimm (who didn’t write the tales, but collected them) . . .
  • Snow White had not one, but three rounds with the jealous witch. After being warned not to let strangers in, she first accepted a decorative comb for her hair which knocked her out until the dwarves removed it, then a new string for her vest that choked the air out of her until the dwarves came home and removed it, and then an apple that lodged in her throat and choked her, making her appear dead.
The glass coffin is from the story, but the prince is smitten by her, tries to buy her (!), and then promises the dwarves that if they make a gift to him of her, he will love her as if he were alive! 😱 They do, his retainers drop the coffin, and the apple dislodges, allowing her to wake. No kiss, that was lifted from Briar Rose (sleeping beauty).

The animals don’t chase the witch from the cliff, either. Rather, she shows up for the wedding out of curiosity, but they are waiting for her, with red hot iron shoes in the forge, which they force onto her and make her dance 'til she dies. [fortunately, I was glancing a couple of lines ahead when reading this to my small children!!! 🤯]
  • Briar Rose doesn’t have three fairy godmothers. Rather, there are 13 faeries, but the king and queen only have a twelve piece setting, and don’t invite them all. The 13th crashes the dinner and curses her, but a faery still has her gift left, and reduces it. These faries are clearly fae from legend.
  • Pinocchio was a a series of short stories in a boy’s magazine in Italy. The talking cricket shoes up in a single episode. Pinocchio is annoyed and smooshes him on the wall.
  • Cinderella’s father seems to be more neglectful of her than dead, but I don’t think it was clear. No fairy godmother, but rather she prays at her dead mother’s grave, and birds bring what she needs. Iirc, the ball was a month long. The prince indeed runs around trying to fit the slipper. Stepmother has one of her daughter’s cut off her toes, and another part of their heel to try to fit, as they won’t need to walk, but rather be carried as queen. They try to attend the wedding to share cinderella’s good fortune, but the birds come and peck their eyes out . . .
And so forth . . .
