i am wondering. i have some friends that say that circumcision is part of the catholic believe and that if the baby boy does not get circumcised, there is a punishment for it. it is very confusing because the health risks of this procedure are conflicting against what they are saying. can anyone tell me if it is TRULY against the catholic religion to NOT get circumcised and if it is wrong not to in the religion, why is that so and where does it say in the bible. i need help before the wrong decision is made.

The Catholic Church doesnt mind either way if a parent elects to have their child circumsized.

The Catholic Church doesn’t say that you have to or don’t have to be circumsized. It is a matter of choice of the parents and if old enough the child. Christians following the Jewish tradition requiring circumcision was discontinued in the New Testament. See the Acts of the Apostles for clarification.

Circumcision has no moral or religious significance to Catholics, or any other Christians (1 Cor 7:9; Gal 5:6, 6:15). In the Old Testament, it was an external mark of being part of the Chosen People, but in the New Testament, has been replaced by the sacrament of Baptism (1 Pet 3:21).

The Catholic Church does not care whether you get circumcised. It does not matter.

In Acts 15 the apostles had a council where they decided that it was not necisary to be circumcised.

The church doesn’t care if a male is circumcised. The church believes it’s entirely unnecessary for religious reasons. If you choose circumcision you cannot do so for religious reason only health reasons. You can search the “Ask an Apologetic” forum for more information on this issue.

Actually the way that St Paul seems to explain it, we all must be circumsized, but only of our heart. We are to wear in our souls. Am I wrong in that translation?

The forum seems to be swamped with questions from non-Catholics, such as this question.

The short answer is ‘no,’ circumcision is not required in the Catholic Church. The New Testament has plenty to say about that. I don’t know of anything but someone trying to spread misinformation that would make somebody ask this type of question.

The real question is, why did you ask this question in the first place?
