Civil Govt Marriage License?

One of my friends is giving me a hard time about getting a marriage license. He says we don’t need one and furthermore shouldn’t get one. Everything I’ve looked into the matter leads me to believe that while there may be some advantages to not having one if either one of us tries to ruin the other person’s life, overall it will just make things more difficult through the years if we DON"T get one. You know, assuming we don’t purposefully try to destroy one another.

Furthermore, on top of that, I seriously doubt our priest will conduct the Marriage Rite for us if we don’t have the proper paperwork, either a marriage license or the appropriate papers from our attorney that would take the place of the license.

Anyone have thoughts on this?

In the US, the priest or deacon acts both as the witness for the Church and the witness for the state.

You cannot marry in the Church without also marrying legally according to civil law.

Can. 1071 §1. Except in a case of necessity, a person is not to assist without the permission of the local ordinary at:

2/ a marriage which cannot be recognized or celebrated according to the norm of civil law;

To be married in the Catholic Church requires much more than obtaining a civil marriage license.

Catholics are obligated to get one as already said.

And if your worried about your future spouse trying to destroy you then the thing to do is not to get married, without trust the marriage will not work.

if your friend and you are in the US he is completely wrong. On what possible basis could he be framing such ludicrous advice? No the priest will definitely not marry you if you don’t have a valid marriage license. That includes a convalidation btw you have to find your original or get a certified copy. I cannot imagine what paperwork from your attorney would substitute unless there is some unusual situation–citizenship etc.
