Hi all,
Just thought I should post that Civilization IV is coming out on Tuesday. The Civilization series has stood the test of time (little Civ joke in there… oh, I’m such a computer geek.), and is probably one of the most moral Computer games on the market.
Basic idea for people who have never played: You start out with one settler in some time way in the B.C., and you have to found a city, and turn it into an empire. You meet other Civilizations along the way, and make deals with them. You can win the game without ever going to war with another civilization, through having a culture that eclipses all the other civilization’s cultures combined, or you can go to war and conquer the world.
This game is also educational, having a “Civilopedia” (Civilization-encylopedia) with historical information on all the technologies, buildings, and military units in the game.
I strongly recommend picking up this game, but don’t take my word for it (whoa, that was a reading rainbow moment!) check out the official site: 2kgames.com/civ4/home.htm Make sure you have your sound on, you’ll thank me after.
Yours in Christ,
Thursday

P.S.
There is only one bad thing about the Civilization series: It’s the most addictive game ever. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve said to myself: "It’s 1 am, you should go to bed. Ok, one more turn then I call it quits for tonight…(2 hours later)…Ok, one more turn then I’m really going to call it quits…

Been there done that. I have stayed up until 2 AM more than I am willing to confess. Are there any other Civ addicts on this thread? Anyone made it to Alpha Centauri yet? What are your favorite civilizations to play with?

I used to work with Sid, we were friends for quite a few years. I actually helped him on some of his early games, converting Hellcat Ace and Spitfire Ace, and Decision in the Desert to the IBM PC (he was a Commodore guy back then). Fun stuff and he is a very smart guy!

My usual civ is Rome, mainly because I like the Legion Unique Unit, but I sometimes play Aztec (good start location on Earth based maps), and sometimes Germany (Panzer is king in early modern age). I think I will be sticking with Rome mainly when I get Civ IV, but I may try out England, now that their Unique Unit isn’t a complete waste.
Also in Civ IV, now that there is religion, I will definitely Grab Christianity as early as posable. I also see me sticking with theocracy till late game (I loved that government!).
I wonder what it is like developing the most loved game series of all time?

Usually WalMart has them on the day they are released. NOT! I am heading to the mall tomorrow! With Civ III I liked playing the Ottomans. Scientific and those Sipahi cataphracts are awesome. But I see that this is not an option in IV.

I have loved the Civilization games since II, and I can’t wait to get my hands on the fourth iteration. My favorite civilization is Babylon, but that’s just me.

I didn’t know that religion is going to play a role in Civ 4! Can someone brief me on the nuances of this new feature?

DH says religion is going to play an important part…BTW, his fav was Rome…😉

I still don’t have it. None of the WalMarts are stocked yet and the Best Buy doesn’t have it yet. If I had known earlier I would have preordered from Amazon. So I ordered from Amzaon today.

Babylon, is one of my favorites also But I really like to play India with Babylon and a rival civilization. Now that Civ IV has religion, when everyone gets a copy we can form a club I can see it not Civ IV from a Catholic Viewpoint 😃

Civilization? eh. I bought it, played for a few weeks, got bored, and gave it up. I liked Age of Empires much better, and my all-time favorite is still Roller Coaster Tycoon. It allows for much more creativity.

Religions are going to be attached to specific technologies, If you Civ is the first to research a particular technology, you get the “Holy City” for that religion. Example: My Civ (Rome) is the first to research monotheism, and I get the 'Holy City" for Judaism. This will give me a happiness and culture bonus, as well as gold from any civ that adopts Judaism as their state religion, and line of site on any city that has a majority of the population practicing Judaism. If I run across a civ the has Judaism as their state religion, they will be much friendlier towards me. However, if they are a different religion, they might demand that I change my religion to avoid war.
All seven religions are exactly the same, just different names, (developers didn’t want to take too much flack), but the game will be fully moddable, as they are even releasing a developers pack for modders, so we can change the number of religions, the effects of religions, ect.
Religion is as big an addition to the Civilization series as boarders and culture swapping were.

Thursday

P.S.
In the modern age, Religion starts to lose some of its power, people can choose to have freedom of religion for their civ. However, you still can choose to keep you state religion, and do well in the endgame.

Oh, boy! This is a totally different game from its predecessors. This game requires a whole different concept of strategy. Religion IS a very big modifier. If they are going to pull religion into the game as a modifier as early as they do, then there should be other religions before Hindu or Buddhism.

It is an awkward game, too. But I will give it time. I am playing the tutortial precisely because it is so different form Civ III. I’m also going to have to upgrade my graphics card.

I’m very jealous. It could be worse though, a friend of mine let me borrow “Rome: Total war,” and I have been playing far too much of that (why else would I be up at 3 am!) There are enough Rome addicts here that we are going to try some LAN parties in a couple of weeks. I hope you enjoy CIv IV!

P.S.
Tomorrow (hopefully) it will be Emperor Thursday to all of you guys. Only seven territories more, and I will have beaten my first “Imperial Campaign” in Rome: Total War.

I am most displeased with CivIV. I had to upgrade to a new video card (even though my computer is only 3 yrs. old)! All my other system requirements meet or exceed recommended settings. It still runs jerkily and I have yet to see one of the wonder movies run smoothly.

I am not happy with the technology tree in that you have to avoid certain technologies or find that your cities become Hindu or Buddhist very early on. I am playing at the tutorial level…sheesh.

Even the music is off! (It’s very lush, however). When you get to the Renaissance, the music becomes Classical which makes no sense whatsoever…skips over the Baroque entirely.

And the screen floats all over the place. Move the mouse a smidgen and off you go either up or across.

I’m going to try to resolve the technology problems but I am am beginning to belive I’ve been taken big time. I didn’t have these problems going from I to II to III.

I am even more displeased with this game. It finally ran on my computer at the lowest graphic settings. Even at the chieftain level someone will attack you. I played an entire game winning at spaceship without being attacked once. It seems that this whole game is nothing but graphics. None of the major wonders or minor wonders had the same effect as they did in Civ III. I have to wonder if the game has moved more toward internet play (which is fine if you are young and have umpteen hours to play online). My final analysis is that CivIII was a much better game.

Thanks for the heads up on CivIV. I was going to buy it for my son for Christmas but I think I’ll pass. Maybe I will wait for his birthday
