I hear the term “MY style of worship” being used an awful lot on this forum.

I need clarity on what this REALLY means. What causes the confusion for me is there are only so many types of approved Masses and none of them are custom to an individuals tastes. They are what they are, and all of them should be done by the book. So, when people use this term are they referring to a specific properly done approved Mass or what? Why not state the specific Mass type they prefer than leave it open to interpretation as to what includes “my style of worship”?

here is why I ask. I see lots of things that are done and lots of people seem to enjoy doing that apparently are beyond what anyone can consider approved. Certainly I know that Bishops can allow things (right?) in their respective domain but how do I know what is over the top or not even in my own parish? If there is no list that says in this area we allow light shows and in this one we allow clapping, how do I know???

How do I know what is approved and what is over the top? I am so confused and asking out of genuine concern for what I am seeing yet feel helpless about it since I really dont know what is okay and what is not okay to add to the Mass in any given situation.

Does this make sense? Dont make fun of me I really dont know.

Serious answers that are not sarcastic would be nice.

Check the GIRM, That is the guide that must be followed. Any deviation from that, except that which is noted as being within the purview of the respective Bishops to change or adapt to local customs is wrong. Period.

Here is the link to the GIRM.

What it doesn’t tell you is what your bishop has changed or when options are allowed, which one your bishop has chosen. I know my diocese doesn’t have that information on their website. The only reason I can figure out why my diocese doesn’t publish the exceptions and changes is they just don’t want the laity to know.

Exactly. I have been reading the GIRM (thanks for the link)! I cant find a lot of the fluff I see in Mass in the GIRM. And, like you said, exceptions and changes are not available – or if they are I sure cant find them.

I am pretty sure that we ought to have a list available to us so we know!

Does anyone have canon law or something that spells out our right to know what is going on???

I find it unacceptable to be in the dark about something as serious as the Holy Mass!

The problem is that we have had no guidance from the Bishops on many things.
JPII while being a wonderfully spiritual man, overlooked so many things because he, himself would not do them. He was snowed by those in power and did not discipline because of it. It caused “The Spirit of Vatican II” to take over and our Holy Mass became an alphabet soup of whatever.

Google can help. Put in your diocese and whichever “toppings” you have doubts about. See what comes up.

The pity of it is, when someone finds the modern music and handholding to be just as important as the rubics of the Holy Mass, we have problems.
