That would not be a rational conclusion. First, historically, good research doesn’t operate on the basis of “exactly how and when Caesar instituted X decree.” Getting within a four-year span is perfectly sensible.I didn’t say it was a scam; I’m not judging the Church’s intentions. But yes, unless you can show exactly how and when Christ or the Holy Spirit told the Church which sins are mortal and which are venial, then I must conclude that the Church created the list on its own.
And second, dogmatically, there is a false premise in your argument which says that the Church could make something up. That is false. The fact that the Church teaches X is a guarantee that Jesus wanted us to believe it, Who sent forth the Church to teach all generations and told all men to believe her.
