Cleaning for advent

I seem to like to clean before a holiday and today we cleaned the house before Advent. Do you all do the same? I couldn’t find any websites about people doing the same, so I wonder if I created a family tradition. Advent wreath is out ready to go along with the family prayer book. I love Advent and Christmas

I “save” several once a year cleaning tasks for Advent and Lent. It doesn’t quite match up with spring and fall cleaning, but it’s close enough.

It makes sense too because I’m putting away all our fall decor and so why not clean under and behind all those things I’m moving anyway, before I put out the Advent things?

After working two jobs with special needs children, coming home to take care of my special needs son while my husband works, teaching CCD, finding time for an elderly and ailing parent and bringing work home, my time is so limited that we’re lucky if we get regular housecleaning done.

Working is non-negotiable. Taking good care of my son is non-negotiable. Honoring my father is non-negotiable. Volunteering in my faith community is an obligation. Minimum laundry, cleaning, straightening up (around the messes ) is necessary. Additional cleaning to be nice and neat and clean is preferable but, of all of the demands I have on me, it’s the least important and the one that just never gets attended to.

I am working at it right now and getting ready to put a tree up. It is a good time to prepare for the holy days. I tend to wait 'til the last moment! Peace.

I think your excused. As Christ was born in a stable-how “clean” was that? Do what you need to do and leave the rest to the angels. Peace

I think our Jewish friends and family carry out an extra effort cleaning leading up to Passover if I recall correctly.

Meltzerboy? Can you give us a little help here? Is this correct or is my memory not serving me well on this?

Your memory is just fine here. Passover in particular requires a lot of cleaning, apart from a change in dishes and utensils, including making sure that not even a particle of chametz (leavened bread product) exists in the home. By tradition, a spoon, feather, and candle (by night) are used to ensure no leaven is present, and the cleaning begins about a month before the holiday.

We also must get our ‘spiritual houses’ cleaned up. What state are our souls in? Do we need to go to Confession? What a wonderful gift to Jesus in celebrating with a clean slate!

Well, I’ll find out how the Lord feels about my housecleaning duties when I meet Him, but I sure hope He thinks like you do!

I usually think of Lent as more the season for cleaning (in fact, when I was teaching in religious ed, I would describe Lent as “spiritual spring cleaning”.

Of course, a certain amount of cleaning does have to take place during Advent in order to make room for the Nativity set and later on the Christmas tree, and I could see cleaning as a family being a productive sort of tradition.

I wouldn’t say I do any extra cleaning as much as rearranging.

If I want to put those pointsettias there, I need to move that basket to there. If we put the tree there, we need to move that chair to over there. And sweep up those dust bunnies in case the elf on the shelf goes on strike again.
