Pope Francis has launched a new prayer app called “Click to Pray” which is found in both major app stores. I am still test driving, but so far so good. Started a thread so people would be aware, try it out, and share their thoughts. I discovered it’s existence due to a story on Foxnews.

Happy MLK day.

Gee, isn’t that what the Liturgy of the Hours is all about, the prayer of the Church?

What percentage of Catholics would you say even know about LOTH, much less how to pray it?

It just kind of reminds me of the Chesterton quote “Christianity has not been tried and found wanting; it has been found difficult and not tried.”

I don’t know . Do you ?

If priests taught about the Second Vatican Council’s teaching in Sacrosanctum Concilium perhaps more Catholics would know more about the Liturgy of the Hours for therein they will find this teaching of the Sacred Council - - - - - - - - " Pastors of souls should see to it that the chief hours, especially Vespers, are celebrated in common in church on Sundays and the more solemn feasts. And the laity, too, are encouraged to recite the divine office, either with the priests, or among themselves, or even individually."

My concern about a “click to pray” app is that it is a call to mediocrity. Why not a call to greatness? Encourage everyone to pray the Rosary - maybe encourage them to say a single Hail Mary every day, then increase it to three Hail Marys, then a decade, then the whole Rosary? Most Catholics know about the Rosary but relatively few actually pray the Rosary.

The app makes me think of the parable of the seed that falls on rock which immediately springs up but quickly withers.

The rosary is not the only good way to pray. The scriptures tell us to pray without ceasing. However that is accomplished, the benefits are enormous.

A quick review to those criticising the app without seeing it (obviously you guys…):
The app showed me a prayer to say (there was a text to invoke God’s help for youth and to dwell with those arriving at the Youth Council in Panama) and after I read it I clicked and the app said “Thank you”. It is not a Rosary app. Then it has some daily prayers for each day Morning - Afternoon - Night. Probably the prayers need to change tomorrow. They are very short prayers and the Morning one included the Our Father with (…) that implied you already know that prayer. The Noon is for the Pope’s personal intention of today (to invoke God’s help to let false rumors be dispersed) and the Evening is a Thank you prayer that ends with Hail Mary also with (…) implying you already know that prayer.
From what I’ve seen it is possible the network doesn’t work so well because the very short video (1 minute) on the home page played very badly and I had to re-start it 3 times to watch it.

Many people today have a difficult time praying. These small prayers on the app are a first step. Give them 150 Psalms to read, the LOTH and the Rosary and tell them they must pray these prayers will probably result in them leaving religion for good or give them the impression that you need a Phd in theology to pray.
My critic would be that this app does not address beginners at all, there are people being baptized in the Church who don’t know even these basic prayers and it would be great if it included the full text of Our Father and Hail Mary. Just saying. Otherwise it looks like a funny app which might attract people to pray. Who knows? God bless.

Question. If I handed my phone to the Pope. With the app on it. Could he navigate it?
