Hi all,

Well I’m not actually myself looking for a cloistered monastery, I’m discerning with active orders but I have always been curious about various cloistered communities. Can anyone link me to some cloistered monastic communities? (male)

I already know of the Carmelite Monks and Carthusians but thats about it…

Thanks!

There are several Benedictine communities that are cloistered, although most do not have strict enclosure. With the Benedictines the degree of apostolic work varies, some communities are more contemplative than others.

Re.: cloistered orders…

I would say take a look at the Cistercians order called Trappist.
A retreat to Gethsemani Abbey,Trappist monastery, in Kentucky
would help you discern your vocation. It takes some planning, when I called 3 weeks ago they were booking retreatents for late 11/07.

Another strictly clositered order is the Carthusians. They have 1 monastery in the US, others are in Europe.

A recent film about the order is “Into the Great Silence” official web site.

Another web site that may be helpful is: vocation.com/

Most importantly you need a Spiritual Director to guide you through the discernment process. Visiting different religious orders
is not sufficient. To find a good Spiritual Director, I would suggest you contact your pastor or your diocesan chancellery office.
