In our diocese, some Catholic churches are being closed and the interior furnishings and the buildings are being sold. What is the ritual used to “deconsecrate” the Church? What actions are taken and what prayers are used? Who leads the service - a bishop, pastor, or ordinary priest?

When we sold our church, as far as I know there was no “deconsecration” service. 🤷

I believe you are are correct. A former church loses its sacred character when pronounced as such by the bishop or simply when the church building is given over permanently to secular use.

This question has come up before at CAF, and someone took the time to look up the Canon Law on the subject
