Colbert is a very funny guy, but he’s not always joking. From time to time he has unabashedly declared himself a Roman Catholic, stated the creed, and called it the one true faith.

Last night he went really far and disagreed with the Pope’s visit to Turkey. He stated that we shouldn’t be reaching out to them at all in any Ecumenical way, and more.

There’s nothing blasphemous in this video, although he flirts with the idea of being politically incorrect about Islam.

Please takes this as all tongue in cheek humor and ask yourself, “when was the last time you heard the Nicene creed get a huge round of applause?”

Um…I wouldn’t exactly bank on his remarks as being his true opinions.

Nothing about this clip is any different from the other jokes I’ve ever seen him make. Last week, I saw him make say some ridiculously racist things in the same exact manner. Is he actually racist? And is he really a Catholic who disagrees with reaching out to Muslims? Could be. But it’s more likely that he’s just being satirical for his show’s character.

Colbert has specifically stated offstage that he’s a “progressive Catholic.”

And, by the way, the fact that he made fun of the Holy Father’s appearance deserves a mention.

He bashes Catholicism like he bashes anythign else–by pretending to be an idiot who believes in it.

I saw that same episode last night, I thought it was funny. :o

Colbert is almost never out of character when he’s live. He’s even in character online. I wouldn’t take much of what he says at face value.
