I play soccer at a NAIA non-Catholic college. I would like to know that if we are traveling as a team on a Sunday or Holy Day is Obligation, would I be in a state of mortal sin if I was unable to get to Mass?

If you are truly unable to attend Mass due to circumstances beyond your control, your obligation ceases to exist. This is true for travelers as well, regardless of reason for travel; if there’s no Mass within reasonable access, there’s no obligation.

You should talk to your pastor at your campus or at home. In general, if you cannot attend mass while traveling, or for some other just or serious reason, you are excused.

Not enough information here on whether you actually cannot go, nor do we need it here on this forum.

Best to speak with your priest. But unless you can walk to a mass by your hotel room, most likely you would be excused (but no one here can tell you for sure).

You can also check out masstimes.org & the hotel front desk to see if you can find a mass in a SAFE, walking distance to your team hotel.

OH, there is also Uber and Lift if your hotel is in an Uber / Lift service area.

Some trips we stay at a hotel (depends on how much money the Athletic Department gives us), and some trips we will leave at like 5:30 AM and return after 9 PM (in which I would be able to go to Saturday night Mass if game falls on a Sunday). Many of our games are in rural areas, so they may not have those services.

Got it. Well talk to your priest.

But you should also discern whether you still want to play on Sundays. Some people (like some very devout pro-sports players) discern that they do want to continue that they do their best to make it to mass, etc.

Others realize that it’s not worth it and stop.

I’m not telling you to quit and perhaps you have already discerned this. But if you haven’t, make sure you pray on it. If you continue to play, that’s fine. But if it’s hurting your spiritual health, then you need some discernment.

The most important thing is to talk to your priest.

God Bless
