I was wondering about my college education. I want to go to a Catholic college, Belmont Abbey to specific, but my family and I wont be able to afford that expecially since my sister goes one year after me and then my brother two years after her. They want me to go to a secular college, NC State specifcally. I want to take religious and theological studies and that what attracted me to Belmont Abbey. Should I make an effort to go to a Catholic College or will the secular one be just as good? They both offer the same degree and many of the classes are similar. Is the Catholic education worth the extra debt after school or should I go with secular school and be able to do more with the extra money for the Church and community?

Well, I’m not ready for college yet, but it seems to me that secular colleges are breeding grounds for corruption and immorality. Although I’m sure some bad things happen even at Catholic schools, I think it would be much less. Just something to think about. 👍

What is the cost difference? Have you checked into all of your financial aid possibilities? Apply at each and let the financial aid offices at each help guide you. You are not obligated to attend if they can’t produce enough aid. The only thing it will cost is your time and maybe an application fee. Worth a shot. Good luck.

As others suggested, try checking into what kind of financial aid you may qualify for. Also, is there a work/study program at Belmont Abbey?

If you simply cannot afford to begin attending Belmont Abbey as a freshman, how about a compromise and going the first one or two years at a community college and then transferring to Belmont Abbey? You could live at home while you attend community college and avoid the traps of secular college living.

Try to at least get some of your education at a good Catholic college.

Good luck. May the peace of Christ be with you. 👋

see your guidance counsellor and go through the financial aid application process. Many private schools offer financial aid packages that result in the end cost to you being equivalent to the public in-state university you are considering.
