It won’t happen until a large profit from it can be made - right know there is no profit or return on the investment to do so - its just a dream right now. Our society would have to change but right now were all about piling up as much money as possible - until this changes or some kind of technology comes along to make it profitable its not going to happen. If it does happen I hope that its not about profit because all were going to do is just go rape some other planet or moon to pile up the money again.

I agree with you in that it will only take off, pun intended, when it is profitable.

The problem is that it cannot be profitable until the technology is farther developed. Right now, it’s going back (for manned flight anyway). So you have a vicious circle: it doesn’t make a profit, so it doesn’t develop, so never makes a profit…etc.

The first airplane to cross the USA, in 1911, took 49 days. It only made it because it was followed by a trainload of mechanics and spare parts. That design was never going to make a profit. But if flight had been treated then the way manned space is treated now, everybody’d be kvetching not about airport security, but about slow, crowded trains.

BTW, using the word “rape” for industrial progress doesn’t make a useful point. You are only able to futz around on the Internet today because earlier generations “raped” the earth, else you’d be scrabbling in the ground to stay fed, like 99.5% of human life in past ages. Technological life requires some spoliation of nature, there’s no way around it.

Personally, I’d say if the industrial processes can be moved in part to astronomical bodies in space, thereby allowing the Earth’s living ecosystems some recovery, that’s a good thing.

I want to thank everyone for their replies.Ive drawn the conclusion that people think we should continue on just as we have been and the budget deficit shouldn’t be a concern when it comes to science research.Don’t cut science research!

I don’t think that conclusion is warranted by the discussion we’ve had so far. However, when it comes to cutting research funding, or any budget item, it is wise to look at the cost and benefit of each item, rather than simply making blanket judgments.

Many are waiting for kidneys but most never recieve them aand they die waiting.Does all this make sense?
Unless we can coax ADULT stem cells to grow new kidneys, people will continue to die waiting until society gets over it fear of organ donation. No amount of money or research can get someoen to give up their organs when they pop their clogs.

As for colonies on other worlds, sure, I think it will happen, I hope I will see man on Mars before my death, and perhaps my great grandchildren [if I have any kids] will live to see colonisation.

I don’t think its immoral to put money into space research. There are plenty of organsiations and govt. bodies funding all sorts of things.

Perhaps if you’re so interested in saving all the people needing kidneys you could petition the American, Russian, Chinese, British, French et al, govts, to stop spending billions on nuclear weapons. Think of all the people we could save with those billions, and we wouldn’t have the shadow of nuclear annhiliation hanging over us.

If it were not for nuclear weapons, WW3, 4, and 5 would have been fought by now, and the world would be shaping up for WW6.

Space exploration would not be an issue b/c everything would be going into troops, ships, and bomber fleets.

And how would any amount of “savings” equate to more human kidneys?

Do you believe that man will actually set up living on another planet or moon, ect.before Christ’s return?
Not likely, at least to any degree of significance. A simply idea as to the cost and resources necessary to do this can be seen by examining similar projects on Earth, such as the Biosphere projects. Doing this on another planet would be vastly more expensive.
Should we spend so much money on medical research that even though we find new discoveries the use of these techniques are so expensive to treat patients that few can afford to pay for them?Thousands are on dialyisis for instance. It cost a fortune to keep these people alive and their lives are still not up to previous standards. Many are waiting for kidneys but most never recieve them aand they die waiting.Does all this make sense?
Don’t get me started on medical issues.🙂

Some people are born with defects of some type. However, many of the problems we see nowadays are due to poor diet and exercise. If people actually ate what the body is designed for, and exercised, medical costs would be vastly lower than they are today.
