At first I LOL-ed at the thought of this scene. Then, I really started to see how the devil has obscured things for so many people.

I think we should all be charitable and pray for any member of any denomination that is so far removed from the Church that Jesus Christ established because of splits and new denominations and spiritual inventions of the last century in particular that they cannot even recognize it! To be so far removed from the truth of God that you view it as Satanic really shows how far astray these people have gone in relation to the truth. So, not only do these people reject the Catholic Church (the Church that gave them the very bible they read and preserved it through history), but they see it as evil and feel justified and pat themselves them on the back for doing so. The devil has tricked THEM into thinking they are doing God’s work by rejecting God’s church. There is a reason why they call the devil the father of lies.

That Tim Staples came out of this environment to become the defender of God’s word that he is amazing. He has shed light on the truth for so many, including his immediate family.

The Church has been slandered in every generation. God provides for us in every generation - 2000 years and counting!

This story hits me in a couple of different ways – first, as a sad commentary on the depth of animosity that it reveals, animosity that should not exist between followers of our Lord and, second, as the scene is recreated in my mind, as horrible comedy.

In my own experience, in an on-line correspondence with a Lutheran, I was asked, “I feel as though I should become Catholic. What do you recommend?” My response was that she should pray about it, listen for the promptings of the Holy Spirit, and then decide what she should do. She did enter the Catholic Church and felt that she had indeed followed God’s will for her.

When Tim Staples, a former Pentecostal minister decided to convert to Catholicism, his girlfriend invited him to her house for a prayer meeting. He went. They started praying for him. They held hands. It all began very gently, “O Lord Jesus, we thank you for Tim, we pray that you bless him…” Five minutes later, they shouted - **“Come out of him you demon spirit of Catholicism!” ** Tim tried very hard not to laugh! This story just indicates the kind of ignorance that some Protestants have and what they think about Catholicism!

Yeah as a former Pentecostal I can tell you that for some Pentecostals Catholics are on the same level as Satanists. Well perhaps a bit better than Satanists. Between Satanists and Pagans

Catholics aren’t really despised by protestants here in Britain. I really think it is just an American thing. I went into a Baptist church and when they asked me what church I came from, I told them; “The Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, on Oxlow Lane.” They gave each other weird looks and grumbled a little bit but they didn’t really seem to mind that much.

Be assured that we Methodists have no such notions. I have been acquainted with Pentacostals, having attended an Assembly of God church in my teens. I was surprised how many former Catholics attended and that they were the most anti-Catholic of all. Calvary Chapel attendees are just about as bad. Anti-Catholic attitudes turn me off cold.

I am assemblies of God and have never seen or heard anything like this. I have attended 10 different Assemblies of God churches in my lifetime due to moving around.

In my methodist church there were absolutely no former catholics but once (a long time ago) a woman who was catholic did come in, we don’t know why but she just came once.

THat is a great point. I think that goes the same in other situations like smoking. I used to smoke and now I can’t stand being near smoke or smokers. It’s a little different but sort of the same.

I believe they must hate us the most for them to stay out of the Church. I also know many Pentecostals. Not one of them accepts Catholicism. They tolerate us but believe that we’re not saved and can’t be saved without knowing the truth church, theirs… That’s why they pray for us.

I’m sure the Converters spend alot of time talking down the true Church to help convert the Newbies. But as I’ve said, the Pentecostals don’t think much of us for saying we’re the first, when they believe they are.

one thing I decided early on after becoming a Christian is to be equally yoked I had to marry another Christian. My wife is what is called a cradle Catholic around here. For the record the only people to mention Catholics in anyway at my home church are a few ex-Catholics who did not feel the draw of the Holy Spirit in their childhood church but now do in a different fellowship. No different from all the ex (fill in the blank denomination) who feel they found the truth later in life and come here to tell all that was wrong with their former fellowships.

that’s great, I really respect that… I think if everyone were like that ,there would not be so much misunderstanding between Christians.

In 1992 my family moved to a small town in Protestant south Louisiana. I grew up in New Orleans where Catholics are the majority and DW grew up in Catholic south Louisiana. There is a Methodist church in our town and a Southern Baptist church, two Church of God in Christ, and a Church of Christ. There is no Catholic church to this day.

In 1993, the pastor of a non-denomenational pentecostal fundamentalist church built a house across the street from us. He had kids of an age with mine and we had a swimming pool. Neither DW or I had ever experienced religious bigotry in our lives. DW teaches at our local state university.

We let the kids play together. Now in Catholic south Louisiana you can buy votive candles just like those that are burned at some Catholic churches (the practice used to be nigh unto universal before Vatican II) at your local grocery store. The candles are not blessed. They have decals of saints on them. They make really good sources of light during hurricanes and power outages and they last a long time. (We still have them and used them during Katrina, Rita, and Gustav).

As a Catholic household, yes, we have crucifixes in our bedrooms, etc…

The kids were out swimming one afternoon when the power went out. The master bedroom was dark since it was late afternoon and we lit the votive candles which were on the mantlepiece above the fireplace…

The kids were never allowed to play together after that. It came back to my wife that our neighbor preached a fiery sermon about us Catholics being witches because we burned candles. (Those of you who know me hear Monty Python screaming “A Witch”!)

To “turn the tables” on my neighbor, we allowed my kids to go to a “Harvest Festival” at his church the year before that on Halloween. They ended up taking our kids to a “Hell House” at a pentecostal church a few miles away.

We were upset and we had to do a lot of “damage control” with our kids.

My neighbor to this day has never done me the courtesy of asking me about my faith. He later excoriated my neighbor to the left of me who lined his driveway with candles in hurricane lamps for a wedding reception…even took in the colors of the ribbons surrounding the lamps…purple and gold (LSU’s colors).

So, what can one say?
