Bogus site… I wouldn’t suggest going there if your anti-virus software is not up to date.

Very bogus site…this is a quote on their site.

“Both Catholics and Protestants believe in Jesus Christ and the salvation he offers, but that’s where the similarities stop. Catholics believe that while Jesus does offer salvation, salvation is only available for those who have been baptized in the Catholic church. And this salvation is conditional. Any any sins committed after receiving salvation cause it to be revoked, meaning that the process of salvation must be regained through penance for those sins.”

Very misleading and untrue.

I sent it to see if anyone would buy the article. I was fooled by it at first.
Still, I know "No salvation outside the Church" was said not to be literal, but maybe the original meaning meant that, without Holy Confession, you have to have perfect contrition, and that is probably less frequent for non-Catholics or Catholics than many Catholics want to believe in these fuzzy-wuzzy times, where we think all are spiritually evolved. Protestants have beliefs that contradict the Bible, while believing they are Bible-believing. They will be responsible for their claim as will we, for what we're given. They are also responsible for following the Holy Spirit, if it's leading them to The Church (they say that even on EWTN). If we Catholics screw up and still believe in Holy Confession, and take it seriously, we can be absolved out of mere fear of going to Hell.

So it is un-true that there is no salvation outside the Catholic Church? If that’s what you are saying then I’m afraid you are wrong.

Anyway, what that link leads to cannot be true. The Vatican is currently trying to draw Catholics and Protestants closer together. No way are they going to come out with a statement like that.

I think we’ve made all the overtures since V2. The others may use somethings we use, but the other churches haven’t really changed anything. Some leave, but then, so do many young Catholics, because we’ve lowered expectations since then. Some weekday holy days of obligations were moved to Sunday, we can eat meat all Fridays but Lent, priests have innovated the liturgy and jazzed up some hymns and even rock instruments. Though somewhat entertained and the comfort zone has widened, but youth aren’t really substantially formed spiritually by it and both they and adults believe what they want. The priests who lighten up the Mass and make it part club meeting don’t seem to take it seriously, and if they don’t, deep down, neither will the flock. The Fundies don’t really respect us for the accommodations to our soft entitlement-mentality selves until, by a miracle, the Holy Spirit draws them there by revealing its exclusive God-sponsoredness to them. If He hadn’t done that for me, I would have totally drifted away. Finding the FSSP helped ingrain that more.

It’s time we go back to our roots. We have not arrived spiritually, as so many thought and many still think. As so many are becoming irreligious and “spiritual” and pew-goers believe what they want, it’s quite obvious we build real Catholic Mass buildings with real Catholic art and real Catholic music, as opposed to the mainstream Protestantized flesh-accommodating communion-with-the-world’s aesthetics version.

The original meaning had nothing to do with “Holy Confession”

I think it’s rather presumptuous to claim that other Christians have beliefs that contradict the Bible, as the Bible is one of the few precious things that all Christians share. Christians do differ on interpretations/applications of specific passages, perhaps, but no Christians to my knowledge have beliefs that contradict the Bible.

If you know of any Christian beliefs that contradict the Bible (as opposed to your own understanding of the Bible) please share. Thank you.

Nevertheless, I think it is a reason. Still, what did it originally mean?

Well, our Pope’s first name is not John, and Cardinal Dulles is deceased for a year and a half now and never had any Vatican posting…

Nevertheless, I think it is a reason. Still, what did it originally mean?
Sorry…can you specify what you mean by “it” in both times you use it? What is “a reason”? What is the “it” you ask about original meaning? Thanks.

It was my guess as to why the “No salvation outside the Church” became declared by later pre V2 popes as not as literally as put in the past, yet there was a reason for it having been said throughout Church history.

The second “it” was what it originally meant. One said that wasn’t the original meaning of it, so I wanted to know what was the original understanding of the saying.

I am sorry, I am not sure what you are saying. I put in quotes what was on that site. I said that the statement that I put in quotes was misleading and untrue.

I stopped reading the article when they said that Pope Benedict XVI was known as John Ratzinger before his election as Pope. I mean, come on! It’s pretty much common knowledge that he was known as Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger not John Ratzinger.

Originally, it was directed to those Christians (i.e. Catholics) who were heretical and so de facto outside the Christian community. This had nothing to do with non-Christians originally.
