I personally think it’s murder, pure and simple. The taking of an innocent life… the stopping of a beating heart. A sin of the gravest magnitude but possibly committed without full understanding of the mother or father…

“Everything you need to know about abortion is contained in the 5th commandment”.
-Cardinal Christoph Schonborn

The word “it” in the OP opens a link to the intended article. I have only glanced at it, and it appears to be along the lines of “…if pro-lifers are really pro-life, then they should support unwed mothers, etc…”. It lists several points of contention.

Point number 5, for instance, says that if we really want to cut down on abortions, we’ll promote contraception. I find that to be really ignorant. You can find data online that charts the popularization/legalization of contraception in the US, and the beginning of legalized abortion and its gradual rise. The data suggests that contraception led to a need for abortion. In fact, the Supreme Court* actually admitted that the need for abortion stemmed from contraception and used that as support for keeping it legal. Contraceptives are increasingly used among the US population, pushed in schools, by doctors, by “women’s health” clinics, etc. yet abortion has not declined in proportion to contraception use. All the evidence regarding point number 5 supports the exact opposite of what that author is claiming.

While I agree with your points, the clear correlation does not exist in every country. If I recall, the countries that had readily available contraceptives but lower abortion rates taught sex education differently. It was taught to be a component of a relationship rather than just teaching the mechanics. I think the change in moral tone is more harmful than just providing contraception, thought there is an obvious enabling function.

This thread has been dormant for a considerable period. With rare exceptions, reviving threads after a protracted period of inactivity is discouraged because:
  • the issues that spurred them are often no longer “hot” or current topics, explaining why thread activity ceased originally.
  • posters originally involved in the discussion are sometimes no longer active on the forum and, therefore, unavailable to reply to comments added to the thread.
Our experience suggests that, when a topic merits revival, it is best accomplished by initiating a new thread that draws on recent events and can be posted to contemporaneously. This eliminates the baggage of folks being frustrated by asking and not receiving responses to issues raised in early posts (because the new poster didn’t notice that the post he was responding to was made a long time ago).

Posters are very welcome to open a new thread on the subject or any other topic, as well as to actively participate in the myriad active threads in the fora.
