Somethings struck me during the reading of the Passion from Mark, so I thought I’d share them for comment:
Mark 14:12-16;
On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the Passover lamb, 3 his disciples said to him, “Where do you want us to go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?” 13 He sent two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the city and a man will meet you, carrying a jar of water. Follow him. 14 Wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says, “Where is my guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?”’ 15 Then he will show you a large upper room furnished and ready. Make the preparations for us there.” 16 The disciples then went off, entered the city, and found it just as he had told them; and they prepared the Passover.
Wow: Talk about a detailed “word of knowledge”. I wonder about “the master of the house”, sort of speculating but I wonder how God inspired and directed him to furnish the upper room. Also, how God guided a man carrying a jar of water. I thought I heard that only women in the time of Christ carried jars of water. Talk about a testimony to God’s ability to direct and guide people !!! As in most of scripture, there are important symbols and reasons behind events.
Question: Because Jesus Christ is God the Son, the Word made flesh, God from God
is there any thoughts or speculation what God the Father went through during the Passion of Jesus Christ ?
Mark 15:31-32;
31 Likewise** the chief priests, with the scribes,** mocked him among themselves and said, "He saved others; he cannot save himself. 32 Let the Messiah, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe." Those who were crucified with him also kept abusing him.
John 20:24-27
24 Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples said to him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nailmarks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” 26 Now a week later his disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.” 27 Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe."
Matthew 28:2-8, 11-15;
2 And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, approached, rolled back the stone, and sat upon it.
3 His appearance was like lightning and his clothing was white as snow. 4 The guards were shaken with fear of him and became like dead men. 5 Then the angel said to the women in reply, “Do not be afraid! I know that you are seeking Jesus the crucified. 6 He is not here, for he has been raised just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples, ‘He has been raised from the dead, and he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him.’ Behold, I have told you.” 8 Then they went away quickly from the tomb, fearful yet overjoyed, and ran to announce this to his disciples.
11 While they were going, some of the guard went into the city and told the chief priests all that had happened. 12 They assembled with the elders and took counsel; then they gave a large sum of money to the soldiers, 13 telling them, “You are to say, ‘His disciples came by night and stole him while we were asleep.’ 14 And if this gets to the ears of the governor, we will satisfy (him) and keep you out of trouble.” 15 The soldiers took the money and did as they were instructed. And this story has circulated among the Jews to the present (day).
Compare the chief priests and scribes and St. Thomas. Both St Thomas and the chief priests and scribes challenged Christ. St Thomas about Christ’s Resurrection after His Passion, the chief priests and scribes during the Passion and after the Resurrection.
Think how Christ would have embraced the Chief Priests if they had sought Him out as St Thomas had done.
Mark 14:66-72:
66 While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the high priest’s maids came along. 67 Seeing Peter warming himself, she looked intently at him and said, “You too were with the Nazarene, Jesus.” 68 But he denied it saying, “I neither know nor understand what you are talking about.” So he went out into the outer court. [Then the cock crowed.] 69 The maid saw him and began again to say to the bystanders, “This man is one of them.” 70 Once again he denied it. A little later the bystanders said to Peter once more, “Surely you are one of them; for you too are a Galilean.” 71 He began to curse and to swear, “I do not know this man about whom you are talking.” 72 And immediately a cock crowed a second time. Then Peter remembered the word that Jesus had said to him, “Before the cock crows twice you will deny me three times.” He broke down and wept. **
Psalm 78
34 When he slew them, they began to seek him; they again inquired of their God. 35 They remembered** that God was their rock, God Most High, their redeemer. 36 But they deceived him with their mouths, lied to him with their tongues. 37 Their hearts were not constant toward him; they were not faithful to his covenant. 38 But God is merciful and forgave their sin; he did not utterly destroy them. Time and again he turned back his anger, unwilling to unleash all his rage. 39 He was mindful that they were flesh, a breath that passes and does not return. 40 How often they rebelled against God in the desert, grieved him in the wasteland. 41 Again and again they tested God, provoked the Holy One of Israel. 42 They did not remember his power, the day he redeemed them from the foe
What happens to us when we “remember God’s word to us” when we have forgotten it and fallen into sin ? Is it not the utter mercy of God that He stirrs us to be mindful of His word in following Him ?
What a terrible trial to face when we forget God’s word when for our own good He permits us to err that we might grow in love for God and our longing for Him ?
