If you have committed a moral sin which you haven’t committed in a long time and you feel complete sadness over what you’ve done but you don’t go to reconciliation, what does that mean?

Does that mean you don’t care?

Why wouldn’t that person who feels sorrow at their sin go to confession?

Feeling remorse over sin, particularly if it keeps you from sinning again, is a good thing. It’s not enough though just to feel remorse, the sacrament of reconciliation is necessary. I don’t know that it means you don’t ‘care’, it might. It does certainly mean that you don’t understand how necessary confession is if you’re in a state of mortal sin yet refuse to go.

Rather than refuse to go it’s moreover like they can’t bring themselves to it because they feel so much disgust

I’d encourage the person to realize that God wants them to move on from the disgust over the sin. Wallowing in such disgust or sadness over our failing can actually be a type of selfishness. That’s what confession does: it frees us from this paralysis, wipes away the sin, and allows us to embrace love and live in peace and joy.

Yes, and our Merciful Lord Jesus Christ is waiting with open arms for that person to use the confessional and receive His grace!

St. Faustina’s diary makes it so clear how much our Lord wants us to accept His Mercy which He is so eager to give.

Do they think they will feel any less disgust by not going to confession? They will continue to feel guilt.

That’s like saying you’re so deathly ill you dare not see a doctor.

I understand the feeling, but it doesn’t improve until you address it.

Are they punishing themselves? It sounds like you are saying they feel so much disgust and sorrow that they don’t feel like they deserve to go to Confession.

If that’s the case, they need to remember they are worthy of love and forgiveness.

That is a sort of pride. Nip it in the bud and go to Confession. Do not let that sort of spiritual pride take root in you, it is deadly.

Jesus knows our sins and calls us by name.

Satan knows our name yet calls us by our sins.
