So I was recently looking through the Divine Office, and I noticed that the Commons for the dedication of a church includes Evening Prayer I, Morning Prayer, and Evening Prayer II.

I then noticed that the feasts of dedications of churches in the General Roman Calendar are either Feasts, for the Lateran Basilica, or optional memorials, for St. Mary Major and St. Peter’s and St. Paul’s Basilicas.

But neither Feasts nor optional memorials have anticipated vespers. When would I pray Evening Prayer I for the dedication of a church?

Thanks!

When either tomorrow’s east is a Sunday, as it was last year, or when one is actually in the church, where the feast of dedication would be a solemnity.

Thank you, CenturionGuard. Now what is this that I am looking at? I have found the picture is St. John Lateran Basilica, also called the Archbasilica of the Most Holy Saviour (new information for me, thanks!). I am unfamiliar with the term “Double of II Class”. Has this changed since V2? My breviary didn’t indicate I should have prayed 1st Vespers last night.

Gee, you are welcome. :hmmm:

Double of II class is a pre-1955 classification system of feasts. It would correspond to a feast in the current missal and kalendar. The official name for St. John Lateran is the Archbasilica of the Holy Savior, which is why the older missals use that term.

:blush:Thank you also, Chatter. 😊
So does breviary.net provide the 1st Vespers of this feast primarily for those in the Archdiocese of Rome, or would it be more proper for those not in Rome to also pray the 1st Vespers because the Archbasilica is the “Mother Church”?

For those in Rome and the rest of us when the feast is on a Sunday.

Each parish celebrates, with the rank of Solemnity, the “Anniversary of the Dedication” of its church-building. This observance is impeded only by liturgical days having greater precedence. Also, the feast or memorial of the titular patron of a parish is also celebrated as a Solemnity within that parish, even if of lesser rank in the universal calendar.

I don’t think that’s right. Vespers I is only celebrated in the church celebrating the anniversary of its dedication. Thus, even if the Feast of the Dedication of the Latern Basilica falls on Sunday, Vespers I on Saturday should be the Vespers I for the Sunday (unless you are celebrating Vespers in the Basilica itself), while the Day Office on Sunday would be the Office for the Dedication. This is also what the Ordo for 2008 indicated.

Generally, only solemnities have Vespers I. The only exception are when the Feasts of the Lord falls on a Sunday, and there are only a few Feasts of the Lord (e.g. Triumph of the Cross, Transfiguration).

Of course, since very few parishes and cathedrals celebrate Vespers regularly, one can rightfully wonder how often will Vespers I of the Dedication be celebrated.

No, Chatter is correct, and if your Ordo indicated that then it must have been a mistake. I have a couple in different languages which give a contrary direction. However, when First Vespers is prayed, then the final Prayer should be replaced with that of Second Vespers for churches outside the dedicated church.

(I should note re: the OP’s original post, that the memorials celebrating the dedication of the other major basilicas do not use the Common of the Dedication of a Church, but the Common of the BVM and the Common of the Apostles)

. . .

If it supersedes the Sunday, it must be equivalent to a Feast of the Lord.
