I’m 38, married with 4 kids and really trying to live out my baptismal promises. I got to reconciliation every 2 to 4 weeks as I struggle with same sex attraction, porn addiction and masturbation.

One priest always asks if I have received the Eucharist and another doesn’t bring it up. I’ve gotten direction on both sides of the issue…when it comes to these sins and receiving the Eucharist. I get to reconciliation as soon as I possibly can after a fall. I realize that my ssa is my cross and that my married vocation is truly the grace of God at work.

Due to the addictive nature of my sin and my disordered (but slowly healing) image of what real masculinity really is …I just fall…can I receive communion? I am amending my life all the time to try to avoid the occasion but walking down the street can be an occasion of sin for me.

I’ve been trying to sort this out by diving into the Catechism (1859) but really need to resolve this issue.

Help me clarify this! It’s really starting to bug me!

First of all, God bless you. You are really showing a lot of courage and strength. Continue to trust in the Lord for healing.

The fact that your sins are habitual/addictive in nature has no impact on whether you can receive communion or not. As long as you have confessed since the last time you fell and made a resolution to amend your life, in other words you are in the state of grace, you can receive communion.

Receiving the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament will continue to strengthen you as you struggle with your cross.

Since you struggle with same-sex attraction, you might find this organization helpful:

Only God knows if your sins are truly mortal. You should not receive the Eucharist if you have committed any of these sins without going to confession first. Go every week if you need to. The grace of the Sacrament will help you overcome these struggles.

Habitual sins, by definition, have weakened your will and therefore are not mortal.

The Eucharist is what will heal you. I guarantee if you trust in Our Lady and pray to her everyday for 6 months, go to mass twice a week and confession every other week, you will be freed.

If you have been Masturbating for 20 years, your will is weakened and don’t let anyone tell you that, in the case where you do fall, that you are subject to Hell because you committed a Mortal Sin. I’m not saying that you cannot commit a mortal sin because you are addicted: I’m talking about the case where you gave your best fight and still failed

Matthew 26:41
Watch and pray that you may not undergo the test. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.
Also, if you want x†reme results, be sure to do some bodily penance (like not eating meat on a certain day, avoiding sweet - (but you can’t start until after Pentecost- no fasting during Easter season!).

Mark 9:28
And he said to them: This kind can go out by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.
Don’t leave your post solider
God Bless you
