I know the minimum requirement is to revive the sacraments once per year, and preferably at Easter time. I just wondered if the time of year, isneseoe a important or not?

So for instance, if I received confession and communion in January, would I not need to revive again until the following year? Or do I have t receive again bin Easter in order to be within the 1 year time frame?

I am fully aware that this is a minimum requirement and that one can and should receive the sacraments more often, but for the purpose of this question let’s just assume from the point of view of someone who (for whatever reason) will only be reviewing the sacraments 1 time per year.

My understanding, and I’m sure someone more knowledgeable than I will correct me if I’m wrong:
  1. Communion once annually during the Easter season. Receiving once a year in January would not fulfill this.
  2. Confession of mortal sins once a year. Since you must be properly disposed to accomplish (1), it makes sense to do this shortly beforehand and remain in a state of grace long enough to receive.

Can. 920 §1. After being initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, each of the faithful is obliged to receive holy communion at least once a year.

§2. This precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season unless it is fulfilled for a just cause at another time during the year.

Can. 988 §1. A member of the Christian faithful is obliged to confess in kind and number all grave sins committed after baptism and not yet remitted directly through the keys of the Church nor acknowledged in individual confession, of which the person has knowledge after diligent examination of conscience.

§2. It is recommended to the Christian faithful that they also confess venial sins.

Can. 989 After having reached the age of discretion, each member of the faithful is ob-liged to confess faithfully his or her grave sins at least once a year.

Can. 916 A person who is conscious of grave sin is not to celebrate Mass or receive the body of the Lord without previous sacramental confession unless there is a grave reason and there is no opportunity to confess; in this case the person is to remember the obligation to make an act of perfect contrition which includes the resolution of confessing as soon as possible.

If you’re going to receive Eucharist only once in the year, then the appropriate time is during the Easter season.

You need to be in a state of grace when you receive. If you have any doubts about that, then going to Confession prior to your reception of the Eucharist is recommended. Otherwise, no… you don’t have to approach Confession in the Easter season (although it’s a really good idea to do so in Lent).
St. John Paul II made the time frame broader.
I don’t recall reading this! In what document did he do this?

It may not have been JP2; that may be poor memory in my part. I do know that around here, the timeframe is lengthened beyond just the 50 days of Easter. Stay tuned, and I’ll find a citation for you.

I’ll correct myself just a bit:
I can’t locate the indult itself (although there are references on multiple websites) that many years ago, the Pope (NOT John Paul II, but Pius XII or maybe even before?) granted the U.S. an indult to fulfill their Easter Duty from the First Sunday of Lent to Trinity Sunday, inclusive.

Confession During Lent

Communion is to be received at least once per year - and this precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season - 1st Sunday of Lent to Trinity Sunday inclusive.

I think the idea that confession was also to be made during Lent came about because in order to receive Holy Communion during the Easter Season those in mortal sin went to confession (hence long lines for Confession before the Easter Vigil/Easter Sunday as well as 2nd Rite of Reconciliation being offered at this time in a lot of parishes).

Thanks for all your answers and contributions everyone, it has been of much help to me and I hope others too. God bless you all.
