The answer is no you cannot receive Communion if you are in a state of mortal sin. Even if you make an act of perfect contrition that would mean your sins would be forgiven should you die before you get to Confession, but assuming you don’t die you must go to Confession before receiving Communion.What if a person has committed a mortal sin, but is not able to get to confession before Sunday? Like the person commits it Saturday night, and goes to Mass in the morning. Is he or she allowed to receive if he or she is truly sorry and intends to go to confession at the next available time?
