I have just been confession for the first time in ten years and it feels awesome. First of thank you to everyone in this community in which through reading many posts i have come back to the church. I just have a question about confession.

Can i take communion after confession but before doing my penance?

Thank You 🙂

Penances should always be completed ASAP, as a matter of extremely high priority. It doesn’t pay to postpone doing anything that will benefit us spiritually, or anything that will help us set our souls at rights with God.

Having said that, you are certainly free to commune at any time after confession, so don’t hesitate to do so. Especially if it is impossible, or very difficult, to complete your penance before the next opportunity arises.

My penance involved praying for an hour in the church but mass was less than an hour away by the time i finished my confession, so i wasn’t sure if i should receive or not. But now i know, thank you 🙂

Jesus, our Lords peace be whit You.
No reason why not. But maybe You should confess moore often? Best wishes, and take care.

Ones sins are forgiven when the priest pronounces absolution. Deliberate failure to perform the penance is another sin, but does not affect the absolution already received. As LilyM stated one should perform the penance as soon as reasonably possible. It avoids the possibility of forgetting it.

Someplace I saw it stated that one should [must?] complete the penance before ones next confession, or confess that one had not done so. Not sure if that is a rule or just good advice.

Yes. Once you are absolved you are in a state of grace. But still make sure that Penance is completed ASAP. In the past when I was able to attend Masses with confessions ongoing, I would say my penance prayers after receiving Communion because I would be involved in the Mass before and after confession.
