Does the Communion fast apply to little particles of food that might be stuck between your teeth? Thanks!

As with any discipline, your intention is what is exhibited and there is no intention to break a fast with something stuck between your teeth. When I grew up the letter of the law was so imposed that I would definitely be in hell for doing such a thing. Thank God that the spirit of Vatican II allows for a better understanding of the “Spirit of the Law”.

I would not fret over something stuck between my teeth but perhaps brushing and flossing one hour before Communion might remove such fears.

If I notice them before I swallow them, I try to spit them out. If I don’t notice them first, or cannot spit them out (eg. I’m in Church) and swallow them, then I receive communion, without the slightest reservation.

As TeachCCD said, it is the intention that matters.

I also liked Teach’s suggestion to brush teach an hour before communion. Very good! I’ll start doing that!

There’s a helpful article called “Ten Commandments for the Scrupulous,” which you should Google and check out. One of those concerns this question. It says that the only thing that breaks the fast is food or drink (other than water or medicine) that you put into your mouth in the manner of eating and drinking during the hour before Communion. Stuff stuck in your teeth does not count, and neither does the flavor of that coffee lingering from breakfast more than an hour ago.

A good flossing and rinsing is a nice, respectful thing to do, however, if you wish.
