Thank you, everybody. I mentioned it in confession on Saturday and feel much better. This morning I was careful to stop drinking coffee in enough time to make sure I kept the entire fast.

😃
But don’t feel like you must stop drinking cold-turkey on Sunday! Fulton Sheen said that since the Church allows a different fast (3 hours at the time), and we are more awake and prayerful when we’ve had coffee, we should by all means drink coffee (if you’re a coffee drinker). I’m not sure how anyone can drink coffee within an hour anyway…I’d be making a b-line to the CR at about the time of Communion.

It helps when it’s a short daily mass 😉

Latin Rite Catholics must fast for an hour before receiving communion. The fast has already been shortened twice in the last century, so I don’t expect there is any wiggle room on this. Frequent communion is very important, and I would encourage people to receive every time they go to Mass as long as they are able to do so.

Receive communion frequently- every time you go to Mass, if you are so disposed- however, don’t go when you should not go- such as when you have committed a mortal sin and haven’t been to confession, when you have broken the fast, or when you have committed certain violations of Canon Law that restrict you from the Sacraments.

Other options would be to attend a Mass that takes place after work, or to wait until after Mass to eat breakfast (perhaps by attending an earlier Mass, and/or taking a portable breakfast with you that you can eat in the car on the way to work).

This is the way we do it when we attend daily Mass before work/school. Mass is early enough that no one is ready to eat and hour before that - we’d like to still be asleep! 😛 But a thermos of coffee and a muffin waiting in the car is very nice for after Mass. Depending on what your job is and how long your commute is, you could also plan to have breakfast at your desk when you arrive at work.
