Communion service conducted by a lay woman?

Today I went to our parishes communion service. There was no Deacon present and so one of the lay women in our parish put on an alter server robe and started to conduct the service and sat in the deacons chair! I took my children and walked out after the first reading(it took me that long to get over the shock of it)! Did I do the right thing? Is there a canon law on this that I could present to the priest if I was right?
