Can someone please explain what this means exactly?

Can. 917 One who has received the blessed Eucharist may receive it again on the same day only within a *eucharistic celebration in which that person participates, without prejudice to the provision of can. 921 §2.

What exactly is participating? Being in the nave responding? Being a extraordinary minister?

It means what you would normally think of as “attending” Mass. You do not have to take any specially active role, but if you’re, let’s say, asleep under the pew or playing Angry Birds in the sacristy while it’s going on, then you aren’t exactly attending Mass.

Oh, I suppose the other thing that wouldn’t count would be just ducking into church at Communion time to receive.

Please note that you can do that if it’s your first reception of the day – there is no such thing as coming “too late to receive Communion,” provided that you are in a properly reverential state to do so. But your second reception of the day, if it happens, (1) must be at a Mass, not some other type of service, and (2) can’t be a pop-in.

It just means attend mass with due reverence (as has been pointed out). You can receive communion any normal way the first time, but the second time must be at a mass; communion service will not suffice.
 
What might also help , is to look at some situations/circumstances where attending that second Mass can be desireable and warranted.
  • If someone had already attended a morning Mass (…:hmmm: … without falling asleep under the pew … or on top of the pew :)] …) and had received Holy Communion. If that person were to only just learn the same morning that a funeral Mass for a friend or an acquaintance was going to be celebrated in an hour or two , and they wished to attend the funeral Mass , they would be free to fully participate.
  • If someone had already attended a Saturday morning Mass and afterwards had learned of a death in the family , subsequently obliging them to travel all day Sunday , they might wish to attend the Sabbath Mass that same day to fulfill their Sunday obligation before travelling.
  • If someone was obliged to attend an earlier Mass because they performed a function at that Mass (such as organist, altar server , or extraordinary minister of Holy Communion) and wished to attend the Nuptial Mass of an acquaintance the same day .
 
like SW said, it means only if you actually attended the entire second mass.

It means that you should not receive at a communion service if you already went to communion that day.
