I am so new to philosophy and for my class we have to write a paper comparing and contrasting two philosophers or two philosophical positions. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what would be good to research? (Something different than St. Anselm and St. Thomas Aquinas, please, as they have many differences in their approaches but similarities are harder to find). I’m looking for something where I could find many similarities and differences to write about. I’d really appreciate any help. Thank you!

You could contrast Aristitole and Plato, or do these have to be Christian philosophers? If they have to be Christian, you can’t go wrong with G.K. Chesterton or C.S. Lewis.

Thanks for your suggestions! They don’t have to be Christian, they can be about pretty much anything. I could even compare/contrast Taoism vs. Buddhism philosophy if I wanted. It’s so open…I’d appreciate anything 🙂

Aristotle and Plato are very good examples. Their realist/idealist philosophies were drastically different, despite that Plato was Aristotle’s teacher. You could also contrast Stoicism and Epicureanism (sp).

What philosophers have you studied in your philosophy class?

If you’re feeling rather ambitious, you could try a comparison between Kant and Hegel. Other than that, the Plato/Aristotle suggestion would work great, too.

Marx and Adam Smith.
To give it more of a contemporary spin look at Latin American liberation theology and North American “health and wealth” gospels.

I will look into Kant vs. Hegel as a possibility. Thank you very much:)

I love C.S. Lewis. As a matter of fact, I started scrounging though my moutains of books that have not been unpacked since I moved here 9 years ago ( :o ) looking for “The Screwtape Letters.” What a great book. And easy for someone new to philosophy (or completely confounded by it, like myself) to digest.

How about comparing Kant and schopenhauer?

Aristotles and Plato are ok , You can also compare the monists and the pluralists presocratic philosopher and their different ideas. perhaps that is quite easy.
