Compromise regarding mail-in voting

What about setting up drop-off boxes near polling locations? This way, those who don’t want to wait in line to vote, and possibly catch the virus, can just drop off their votes in a securely guarded box, which will be emptied by officials periodically throughout the day of the election? And those who fear fraud in mailing their ballots don’t have to mail them, just drop them off.

Any thoughts?

I like the idea, however it would be giving into the meritless and false claim by an administration sensing defeat and looking for a way to invalidate the election…Trump would just say the drop offs could easily be infiltrated by operatives bent on stealing the election.

Not sure about other states, but in CA we can simply drop off mail in ballots at polling places without mailing.

Each side has to give a little: that’s the nature of compromise. Make it nationwide with ample security. I think the public might go for it, and neither side would complain, except Trump himself, who always complains about something.

What about virtual voting in a secure platform like when we file tax returns?
 
@meltzerboy2, Colorado already does this. We have had mail voting for years now and it works quite well. There are still polling stations for those that want to vote in person and there are also boxes for personally placing your mail vote. Or, you can just mail them in. If there are any issues with these choices, I’ve not heard them. People like the choices and sometimes vote in person one year, mail in the next. I used the drop box one year when I forgot to mail my vote in on time. I’ve never failed to vote!
 
Smart state. This choice should be given to people in all the states.

A friend of mine, a native New Yorker, lives in Colorado near Denver and likes it a lot.
 
I’m about an hour north. I love to visit Denver but enjoy living in my smaller city and just going there when I want to! But, the traffic! 😱

What about people who are unable to leave their homes due to illness or disability, but still want to vote?

What about students attending college away from their home state? (My first time voting was in 1988, I was attending college in Ohio, but mailed in my vote to my home state of Michigan.)

If I can’t trust the government with my phone calls, I’m not going to trust them with my votes.
 
I’m not saying mail-in, absentee voting should be eliminated, only that the drop-box method can be a viable alternative to mail-in and in-person voting for some people.

Apparently that is the case with Colorado and California, and probably other states as well. I think it should be a nationwide alternative.
 
How carefully guarded would the drop-off boxes be? How secure would they be? Could that become a case of the fox guarding the hen house? In other words, could the ballots still be tampered with, or conveniently “lost”? What are the safeguards against corruption?

It might be a better choice than mail-in only, but I would still feel better about being able to vote in person – with the COVID safeguards in place.
