I’ve been emailing an uncle-in-law (I haven’t met the man yet) who claims that he used to be Catholic. Now he is for “abortion rights, gay rights”…all the stuff that disagrees with Church teachings. He has two children with his wife.

I tried to convince him that the fact that life starts at conception is a scientific fact, not just a religious catch-phrase. He denied that. Do you have any ideas for converting this man? I’m praying for him. God bless you!

yeah and they have different heartbeats, too…since he has two children, I don’t see how he can deny that. Please pray for him and his family!

Sgt Sweaters:
Here is a very good article on embryology from First Things, from a couple of months ago:
firstthings.com/ftissues/ft0412/opinion/saunders.htm

Embryologists across the board recognize that life begins at conception. There are no Christian embryology text books, and yet they all support this fact.
Thank you. Do you have anything from scientific journals? FT is a great magazine but I don’t know what he’d do if he figures out that it’s a Christian (Catholic?) magazine - he might not think the source is reliable for that reason.

So when does he think that a new individual of the human species has its beginning?

As a matter of embryology, there is no doubt about the fact that a new individual begins at conception. Pro-choicers are simply afraid to state the obvious–trying to obfuscate it with such terms as “potential life.” What’s potential about it? Is it alive or not? Is it a new individual or not?

I don’t know when he thinks that life begins. It’s very immature of him, especially since he was there when his children were conceived. I learned about conception back in high school science class.

Now there is a movement afoot in–where else–Massachusetts, to legislatively define that human life begins at implantation.

Now, implantation is certainly necessary for an embryo to continue to grow, but that’s not when a new individual of the human species begins. The embryology is undeniable. A new human individual begins at conception.

I think the name of the book is Symphony of the Unborn that details a court case about some frozen embryos. The main witness was a world renowned geneticist named Dr Lejune. His testimony is very compelling. I will try to find the place you can get this book. It is excellent

It is fine and great to find scientific data that strengthens your faith personally, and you can certainly share that info, but don’t expect to convert the uncle by giving him an air-tight argument. His problem is obedience, not that someone has failed to give him fine apologetics. Suffering and sacrifice, prayer, good example, and encouragement are what you need to use.

That’s sad. People try to say that life begins at implantation in order to justify the use of contraceptives & abortifacients.

Scott, I’m praying for him and I’m offering up sufferings for him. This feels very urgent because he has two children and a wife and I would hate for those kids to grow up without knowing God. I’m very blessed to have been raised Catholic & prolife.
